Loss condemns Spain to early exit
Source: ESPN
Defending champions Spain have fallen at the first hurdle as a 2-0 defeat to Chile means they have no hope of progressing from Group B.
Vicente del Bosque had led Spain to glory at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 but, following his side's 5-1 humbling against Netherlands on Friday, a reaction was required to avert a group-stage exit.
They had produced such a reaction four years ago when bouncing back from a defeat in their opener to Switzerland, but La Furia Roja appeared for the most part to be a pale imitation of their 2010 vintage.
On 20 minutes, Chile broke the deadlock, carving the Spain defence open as Arturo Vidal, Alexis Sanchez and Charles Aranguiz combined before setting up Eduardo Vargas to skip around Iker Casillas and finish.

(39,367 posts)The most dominant team I've ever seen. Two Euro titles sandwiched around a World Cup, all won in brilliant fashion. Nothing lasts forever and all that.
Zoiks!

(297 posts)Is that Brazil looks like crap. Even their win against a not-so good Croatia was nothing to write home about.
Germany is now the clear favorite but it's time to start putting some money on the Netherlands

(12,502 posts)I'm one of those who never watched a whole soccer game until this World Cup games, and can now see I'm missing nothing.
I did not know about this "flopping" thing until just a couple of days ago. The web has shown compilations of these flopping cheaters, and it appears to be a very common practice. What a bunch of drama queens. And it appears to be sanctioned as A-OK by that greedy FIFA outfit.
I'd like to see one of those flopping sissies try that kind of a stunt in a hockey or football game.
I was so pissed at myself for trying to get caught up in the excitement, thinking there must be something positive there, then was stunned to see such obvious flops, and sensed I just wasted my time....like watching WWF wrestling on Saturday morning TV. It just spoiled the whole experience because I realized I was no longer watching a competitive game, but a farce in which cheaters can very easily throw a game with some Hollywood style fakery. Maybe that fakery explains European soccer fans inclination to riot in the streets and stands and hospitalize or kill each other.
If soccer is to survive in the U.S., I suggest that video replays be used to catch the fakers and penalize them heavily, or be a laughing stock imho.

Lesson learned, my fault. Only angry at myself.
For other foolish people like me in the future could you maybe avoid putting the result in a big, bold headline on first page?
Thanks for any consideration

(14,737 posts)....except that Spain weren't playing their usual tiki taka football, and might have done slightly better if they had, even if it is rather boring to watch.

(3,944 posts)but the team as a whole also stunk it up.
The field is pretty open at this point. I'd love to see a country win for the first time - perhaps the Netherlands?
I just got my voice back after Monday's USA-GHA match, and I plan to lose it again on Sunday.
