US aims for trial of Benghazi suspect held on ship

By LOLITA C. BALDOR and NANCY BENAC

WASHINGTON (AP) — The capture of an alleged leader of the deadly 2012 attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, gave U.S. officials a rare moment of good news. Now, they are preparing to try the captured Libyan in the U.S. court system and pledging to double down on catching others responsible for the deaths of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in the attacks.

U.S. officials said Ahmed Abu Khattala was being held on the USS New York, a Navy amphibious transport dock ship in the Mediterranean Sea. The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the Libyan's whereabouts publicly by name.

Abu Khattala, who was captured Sunday on the outskirts of Benghazi by U.S. special forces, was headed to the United States to face what President Barack Obama called "the full weight of the American justice system."

The Benghazi attacks, and the Obama administration's conduct in the aftermath, have long been a source of festering political discord. And some Republicans on Capitol Hill were quick to voice skepticism about the administration's plans to try Abu Khattala like a civilian.

The Pentagon says a Libyan militant accused in a deadly attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, is in U.S. custody. The capture of Ahmed Abu Khattala marks the first time the U.S has apprehended one of the accused perpetrators in the 2012 attack. terrorists for years already. That fact you don't seem to realize that shows how simple it really is. Here's one from just last month:

but airstrikes seem to be ok with Americans as a group - especially since Malaki is begging us to do airstrikes. As far as the terrorists in US courts - it beats letting them languish at gitmo. Those are the only choices available (unless we just shoot them on the spot which I suppose is an option also).

War propaganda can be wonderful.
I'm even happier to see how you apply war propaganda correctly and exclude USians from the list of those engaged in "terrorism".
An ill-defined illegal and immoral war is such a wonderful thing!
Esp. if there can be never-ending bombings of ever widening targets, drone strikes against secret enemy lists and "suspicious activity", and USians safely put mercenary boots on the ground, not their own precious feet. All for reasons ordained by God, Democracy, Freedom and The American Way.

Your country has been "shooting them on the spot" for years, all across the world, using drones, hellfire missiles, and a thing called the "double-tap" (none of which can be "terrorism", since USians aren't scared even the tiniest bit - they're itching for more - and besides, the terms "terrorist" and "unlawful combatant" are only ever properly applied to the US enemy of the day).

Now, what was that about US proxy Saudi Arabia arming and funding ..... well..... ISIS?
Time for full denial.

I read the entire exchange you had with "delrem" & I have to say some here on DU do seem to wave the "Americans Suck" flag a lot! SAD.

Anyway, you made some very good points! If there is one thing we Americans can usually get right, not all the time, but most of the time, that is a jury trial...We have convicted many & some have been acquitted. A point lost on "delrem".

Just wanted to let you know there are still some of us on DU that think America does do good despite the bad we have done in the past, & we can do better going forward learning from our mistakes. GITMO & TORTURE were mistakes...Jury trials will highlight our true values not only to the world but to ourselves...Which I think has been lost on many Americans since 9/11 & the Cheney/Bush Administration.

I actually very rarely even look at the name of the people I'm engaging - I try and respect everyone but this one has been spouting this bullshit for a very long time and I'm sorry I wasted my time. First they bitch about gitmo and now they bitch about this. They're the perpetually outraged and I have no use for them whatsoever.

And no, leftynyc, Gitmo and Torture weren't "mistakes".
Neither are drone strikes and double-taps, or mass bombings, or the aiding and arming of mercenary armies.

Now if only Maliki, who is the cause of it all (the US being innocent), would bow to ISIS like his masters suggest.
