"open door syndrome"? Really? I checked Webmd and several other sites to see if I could educate myself on this and couldn't find it anywhere. It appears Mr. Morton has discovered a new syndrome. I do hope his paper on this is in the next edition of the New England Journal of Medicine. It will be a fascinating read.

What a dumb-ass (no pun intended). First of all he assumes that the majority of sex between men is anal. In all my years as a gay man I have not found that to be true. But even if it was for this to cause "back door" syndrome there would have to be a prolonged and repetitive weakening of the anal sphincter before it would cause the problems he describes. I know many gay couples who regularly engage in anal sex and neither one of them is wearing diapers.

Secondly he says gay sex reduces the average life span of a gay person by 25 years as a result of anal and oral sex. I would like to see the statistics of this. There certainly was a period of time in which thousands of gay men were dying of HIV and AIDS. That was being spread through both anal and oral sex as well as IV drug usage. That definitely had an effect on the average life span of gay men at the time.

While I don't have the statistics I would be surprised if there was any appreciable difference between the life spans of gay men and the general population. If anything many gay men are living healthier lifestyles because they like to keep themselves fit and at least to some degree more dispensable income enables them to make healthier eating choices.

But looking at the photo of him and his seeming fixation on the mechanics of gay sex suggests he is no stranger to gay sex.

I have a long-standing interest in sex as a scientific matter (yes, go ahead, I've heard them all) and from what I can remember of the stats, the life expectancy of gays and straights is pretty much the same once you exclude suicide victims. Gay men are slightly more likely to die from violence but slightly less likely to die from heart disease so it all evens out in the end. That's if you exclude suicide victims. While society is gradually getting better, suicide among gay people (especially gay youth) is still horrifyingly high.
