Sudan death sentence woman freed

Source: BBC

A Sudanese woman sentenced to death for abandoning her religious faith has been freed from jail, her lawyer has told the BBC.

Meriam Ibrahim's death penalty was overturned by an appeal court, the official Suna news agency reported.

She is married to a Christian man and was sentenced to hang for apostasy in May by a Sharia court after refusing to renounce Christianity.

I'm glad the international outrage had an effect. We need more international outrage to make countries who have laws like this ashamed of themselves, or at least afraid of losing any aid money. We need to attach a modest amount of human rights respect to any kind of aid that goes to any country.

No I don't care to hear the false equivalencies. I am NOT a "good" liberal.

I'm sure there are many women in similar circumstances! May this be an example to the misogynous male leaders who use religion as their veil/excuse for violence & control over women!! If there is a God I doubt She would be on their side!

And does she get to take her children with her?

Her sentence was overturned, not her conviction. Or has her sentence been "reduced" to exile and the loss of her children? Until we know that, this ain't over...

and it was her lawyer who pointed out she wasn't free yet. Since the lawyer has now said this, it looks a lot more definite.

"We are very very happy about this - and we're going to her now," Mrs Ibrahim's lawyer Elshareef Ali told BBC Focus on Africa.

"They have released her... she's on her way to home," he said.

This is terrible news! Meriam Ibrahim, recently freed, was arrested again at the airport, trying to leave Sudan, by 40 National Security Agents.

What is most ominous here, as detailed in the article, is that this is now being treated as a "National Security" issues. The NISS (Sudanese secret police) "does not operate through the courts if it claims to be working on a matter of national security and can detain people indefinitely. She could be held forever, with no legal recourse.

Ibrahim arrested with husband and two children at Khartoum airport one day after she was released on orders of appeal court

Meriam Ibrahim, the Christian woman released from death row in Sudan on Monday, was arrested with her husband and two children at Khartoum airport on Tuesday as the family attempted to leave the country.
...
Her lawyer, Elshareef Mohammed, who was with Ibrahim at Khartoum airport at the time of the arrest, said more than 40 NISS officers apprehended the family as they attempted to board a plane to the US. Ibrahim's husband, Daniel Wani, is a US citizen.
...
He said the appeal court had quashed Ibrahim's convictions and there were no restrictions on her travelling. He added that political differences within the government over the case may have played a part in the decision to prevent her leaving.

"I'm very concerned. When people do not respect the court, they might do anything," said Elshareef.

it did seem too good to be true.

So I was right to be suspicious about the ruling -- it was her punishment, not her conviction, that had been "quashed." Of course, the arrest could have been coordinated between the NISS and the courts.

someone claiming to be Ibrahim's brother announced that her family didn't agree with the court ruling, had not been informed she was being let out of jail to go to the US and that her "apostasy" was a deadly insult to the family that required revenge.

Sudan death row woman 'faked papers'

The Sudanese woman freed from death row has been accused of trying to leave the country with fake documents, her lawyer has told the BBC.

Meriam Ibrahim was detained on Tuesday, a day after a court released her, annulling the death sentence imposed on her for renouncing the Islamic faith.

Mrs Ibrahim had emergency travel documents issued by South Sudan when she was detained at Khartoum's airport.
...
Sudan's appeal court overturned the conviction on Monday.

Her husband is from South Sudan, though that would have been part of Sudan when he was born.

they're "fake" because a) neither of them are South Sudanese citizens, and/or b) Ms. Ibrahim and her children are still Sudanese citizens in Sudan's eyes.

But since when does that require being arrested by a SWAT team?

...of traveling with falsified documents and giving false information," according to her legal team...(Her husband) Daniel Wani is being held as an accessory.

Sudan's National Intelligence and Security Services said that she had South Sudanese travel documents, despite not being a citizen of South Sudan, and she was heading to the United States, which is not her native country.

This was considered illegal by the Sudanese authorities, who have summoned both the U.S. and South Sudanese ambassadors," the agency said in a message posted on its media Facebook page early Wednesday.

Well, she certainly can't get a Sudanese passport or exit visa while she's in jail, can she? If her marriage is not recognized by the Sudanese government, would she be able to get a passport anyway? And what if the court doubles down AGAIN and says that they have to leave their children behind?

Here's hoping the U.S. and South Sudanese ambassadors bring enough money with them.

Jun 2014
The Guardian.com: Meriam Ibrahim, the Christian woman detained when she tried to travel to the United States after her release from death row in Sudan, was freed again on Thursday and took refuge at the US embassy in Khartoum, her lawyer said. on Thursday

"She is in the US embassy now," Mohanad Mustafa said of Ibrahim. "She and her husband think this is a safe place for them" after receiving death threats.

Ibrahim, 27, had been detained with her husband and two young children at Khartoum airport on Tuesday – over allegations she had forged travel documents – as the family tried to leave the country for the US. But she was discharged from a police station, on the condition she remains in Sudan, after the government came under pressure from foreign diplomats

No indication if her husband (a U.S. citizen) or children are with her. But the first step in the right direction has finally been taken.

According to Reuters news agency, quoting her lawyer, Mrs Ibrahim was released on the condition that she remains in Sudan.

"Mariam was released after a guarantor was found, but, of course, she would not be able to leave the country," Mr Mustafa said.

So it's more like she's out on bail. But since she and the children are still considered Sudanese subjects, and she hasn't been acquitted of anything, there's still a lot that can go wrong. I won't feel better until they're all on a plane to America!
