Huge Numbers of Steelworkers Rally for the Save Our Steel Jobs Tour

Source: USW News

Virginia, Minnesota was the final stop on the national Save Our Steel Jobs (#SOSJobs) campaign and over 2,000 Steelworkers, families and friends attended to let their fellow workers in Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Alabama, where previous rallies were held, that know they stand united.

South Korea and eight other countries have been dumping unfairly priced pipe and tube products into the U.S. market in violation of federal trade laws. These imports are threatening the Minnesota iron mining industry and more than 500,000 steel-related jobs across the country. The U.S. Department of Commerce is currently weighing the trade case and a decision is expected in mid-July.

MSNBC ‘s popular host of “The Ed Show” Ed Schultz helped to raise the signs that read “Save our Steel Jobs” and “Keep it Made In America” with statements about illegal steel and it’s worth.

“The U.S. economy prospers when domestic companies and steelworkers have a fair chance to compete in a rules-based market,” said John Rebrovich, assistant to the director of United Steelworkers District 11.

How could we produce weapons or defend ourselves if we have to import the steel to do it?

Rather than fight wars in Iraq and elsewhere, we need to rebuild our industrial capacity so that we can defend ourselves.

And we need to work much harder to become as independent as possible of oil and gas.

in WWII, how women worked in munitions factories, how the country pulled together to win that war. No more. The corporations have done everything they possibly could to weaken our country and destroy our industry.

Our greatest military threat is our lack of adequate heavy industry. And it gets more threatening every year. It is naive to think we can continue to depend on foreign countries to provide the resources we need to maintain and improve our military readiness.

I agree completely with you that lack of heavy industry is a huge defense weakness.

you are aware that a significant percentage of US defence contracting goes to other countries? The Abrams tank's main gun is made by Rheinmetall (German), for instance. Standard-issue sidearms are made by Beretta (Italian) and SIG Sauer (Swiss/German); Special Forces use rifles made by FN (Belgium) and submachine guns made by H&K (Germany).
