Cochran wins runoff; McDaniel refuses to concede, plans challenge
Source: Clarion-Ledger
Thad Cochran has won the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate for the seventh time, squeaking past challenger Chris McDaniel in a runoff Tuesday, according to unofficial results.
But McDaniel didn't concede Tuesday night and in a speech to supporters referenced "dozens of irregularities" in voting Tuesday and indicated he would challenge the results over Democrats voting in the Republican primary.
Cochran led McDaniel 51 percent to 49 percent, in a turnout that spiked from 319,000 voters in the June 3 primary to more than 360,000 for Tuesday's runoff. He will face former U.S. Rep Travis Childers, a Democrat, in the November general election.

To absolutely no one's surprise, Chris McDaniel refused to concede tonight despite a clear win by Thad Cochran. The legal challenge will be filed first thing in the morning. This campaign is not over...

(75 posts)It will dilute the Republican vote even more. Travis Childers (D) has a real chance to take the Senate seat in November.

(31,804 posts)How many did that no one knows at this point. But it is all public record so eventually the lists can be compared to see who did what.

(35,692 posts)There is no party registration - likely a legacy of the segregationist past when lots of voters were Democratic in name only in MS. There is some weak rule that one is not supposed to vote for a primary candidate you do not intend to vote for in the general election but this is obviously cannot be enforced. Anyway I thought baggers liked this sort of thing.

(75 posts)The GOP is split straight down the middle. It will be a cold day in hell before Tea Party McDaniel supporters vote for Thad Cochran in the general election. They will stay home in November.
The Democratic party is 75% African American. Blacks in Mississippi actually have a fairly high rate of voter participation. On average, they represent between 35%-38% of the total vote. If 30% of white GOP stay home, there is a real chance that Childers could win this thing. It's no secret that Thad will retire during this term if he wins. The advantage of senority disappears with his retirement.

And, it's always nice to see the GOP is at odds with itself.

(75 posts)This is a BIG deal to white people in this state. If you have a black person in your advertising then you are a liberal commie-socialist Obama lover. Cochran is seriously weakened after this runoff. And not just politically. I expect him to drop dead at any moment.

(1,325 posts)he doesn't concede by next week Tuesday. If his donors and base say "continue" then he will continue and all that's left are dirty tricks.
Cochran would probably win against Childers if this was a 1 on 1 race, BUT McDaniel has already played dirty and so...it's anybody's game if he continues with "scorched earth".
Taking photos of a candidate's wife in a nursing home? That's entering sicko territory.
Molesting animals and bragging about it at a speech. That's also sicko territory. Nice leadership you got there, Miss GOP.

(365 posts)who voted against him need to have their votes nullified, according to McDaniel?
Even though this was an OPEN primary?
I hope to HELL that this will not be tolerated. Black people have fought too damn hard this past century+ to have their voices nullified.
Kind of off-topic, but this is as sick as when Donald Sterling claimed that he GAVE his Black players money, food, cars, etc., as if they hadn't worked their butts off earning it. They were still being portrayed as taking handouts.

(15,192 posts)Did anyone think this a$$hat would be gracious in losing?
Holy crap! I've seen 2-year olds denied candy at the checkout line accept the outcome with more dignity, respect and grace, than T-Baggers who lose an election.
They've been holding their breath and stomping their feet since the day this President took office.
I'm sorry, but these folks need to be "crushed". They need to be beaten to a pulp so badly this November that they either start growing up, or (in a better scenario), decide they've had enough and leave this country in droves.
There is no compromise, or ability to "worK" with these people for the betterment of our country.
Let's hope that this Mississippi example is an example to us all...IF OUR FOLKS TURN-OUT AND VOTE....WE WIN!!!
I hope people understand...we have an opportunity to drive a stake through the heart of the Tea-Bagging movement, and the "Talk-Radio-Republicans" this November.
"EFFING" SHOW UP AND VOTE!

And apparently Rickey Cole (chairman MS Democratic Party) is talking to MS Tea Party encouraging this strategy.
