Kerry Issues Warning After Syria Bombs Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry warned Mideast nations on Wednesday against taking new military action in Iraq that might heighten sectarian divisions, after Syria launched airstrikes across the border and Iran flew surveillance drones over the neighboring country.

The U.S. and a senior Iraqi military official confirmed that Syrian warplanes bombed militants' positions Tuesday in and near the border crossing in the town of Qaim. The Iraqi official said Iraq's other neighbors - Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Turkey - were all bolstering flights just inside their airspace to monitor the situation. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

American officials said the strikes appeared to be the work of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government. They said the target was the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a Sunni extremist group that seeks to carve out a purist Islamic enclave across both sides of the Syria-Iraq border.

"We've made it clear to everyone in the region that we don't need anything to take place that might exacerbate that sectarian divisions that are already at a heightened level of tension," Kerry said, speaking at a meeting of diplomats from NATO nations. "It's already important that nothing take place that contributes to the extremism or could act as a flash point with respects to the sectarian divide."

for that, too. I am sure your slings and arrows won't deter him or his commitment to the hard work it takes to try and deal with every level of hell exploding at the same time.

I am familiar with your Both sides are the same posts. I don't agree with you here.

and sided with the weapon inspectors who were reporting back that military force was not needed.

Not one other IWR vote followed through with their commitment to hear the weapon inspectors out first. He stood with the weapon inspectors report and against Bush's decision to invade before, during, and after the invasion. He took hits from every side for it.

Discernment should separate us from the RW mindset. Too bad it often does not.

I can cherry pick from statements made by Dean and Kucinich - should the Rove machine and their attending media whores targeted them the way they did Kerry. Kerry was right all along that he did oppose the DECISION to invade. So did Hagel, but, some time later. Weapon inspectors reported no need for force - and Kerry sided with their view. That never changed. Was he supposed to say that he was against Saddam being disarmed when media reports were making exaggerated claims after the invasion?

Kerry gets kicked a lot - he has for decades - because he has always been the one sticking his neck out the most.

Try doing a real factcheck and learn about the man you choose to doubt.

I would bet my house that you haven't risked yourself even 1% in the arena where you take your potshots at John Kerry.

Dean: "I have never been in doubt about the evil of Saddam Hussein or the necessity of removing his weapons of mass destruction." —March 17, 2003

Now - in complete fairness to Dr. Dean, he said that as a man seeking to become the commander-in-chief. Did he WANT to say it? No. But the invasion was beginning and as a candidate who wanted to be seen as stepping into the role of commander in chief he said what he needed to say for the TROOPS devoted at that point to a mission, and, because, who knows, BushInc could have arranged to plant WMDs in Iraq (some say they tried) and everyone who doubted them publicly would be made into weak fools.

That's called putting whatever was said in context of the moment and the circumstances it was said. I understood exactly what Dean was doing. I understood exactly what Kerry was doing. I understood exactly what Kucinich was doing. Because I bothered to learn and know who they were throughout their entire careers. It took me the longest to do it with Dean. Kerry and Kucinich I knew like the back of my hand at that point.

We are warning Syria to not attack the ISIS forces in Iraq on their border with Iraq while we are preparing to attack the ISIS forces in Iraq and while we continue to supply (indirectly) ISIS forces in Syria, which aid is bolstering ISIS forces throughout the region including in Iraq. Meanwhile Iran can and probably will do something to defend the Maliki government from ISIS, but we, for domestic political reasons and because of our alliance with the Sauds, will oppose such actions instead of coordinating and aiding them.

Let the principles work things out as well or as poorly as they can. For crying out loud, isn't this the way it should be? Why should it be OUR PROBLEM? Why should everything be OUR SOLUTION? This sort of objection just points out how manipulative the US can be, and IS. Worldwide.

It was obvious that Kurd leader Barzani was bored during the press conference they had recently. Iraq is not in "civil strife", John. It is the inevitable civil war that many predicted would happen. All we can do now is sit back and watch the ME boundaries get redrawn.
