Conservative Freakout Blames 'Uncle Tom' And Voter Fraud For McDaniel Loss

Source: Talking Points Memo

Some conservatives aren't happy that their preferred candidate, state Sen. Chris McDaniel (R) lost to Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) in the runoff of the GOP primary for U.S. Senate in Mississippi. Many tea party types are openly speculating foul play and that Democrats and black voters were involved. Take Rush Limbaugh who wondered if Cochran's campaign slogan in Mississippi over the last few days was "Uncle Toms for Thad."

"I wonder what the campaign slogan was in Mississippi the past few days, 'Uncle Toms for Thad'? Because I thought it was the worst thing you could do as an African American, vote for a Republican. The worst thing you could do," Limbaugh said on Wednesday. "But somehow they were made to believe that voting for old Thad would be fine and dandy. And why? Because they were told Thad's done a lot for black people in Mississippi. Must be the first time they were told that."

Cochran's turnaround victory in the race on Tuesday was immediately met with criticism by McDaniel and tea partiers over his strategy of reaching out to not only Republicans but also Democrats and African-Americans, a move that dismayed tea partiers but isn't illegal under Mississippi's open primary laws.

When Cochran was named the winner, McDaniel himself openly questioned the results, and said "there is something a bit strange, there is something a bit unusual about a Republican primary that's decided by liberal Democrats." "Before this race ends we have to be absolutely certain that the Republican primary was won by Republican voters," McDaniel also said.

in Cantor's case he would have been helped by Democrats if he had helped with immigration reform and some other issues because democrats would have seen that if they are going to be stuck with a republican they will go with the one who doesn't suck that much.

but in the case of Cochran it did have to do with large black turnout who were going to get it the worst if that teabagger was to end up being senator.

it doesn't mean cochran is so great but he does support some things which the teabagger would not and it would most likely hurt the black community more than others.

One of 435 House members being a crazy teabagger doesn't change much of anything. And taking down Cantor is beneficial.

One of 100 Senators being a crazy teabagger causes much greater problems. And Cochran is not in a leadership position, so getting him out of the Senate doesn't have the benefits of getting Cantor out of the House.

Plus Cochran has a history of actually helping his state, unlike Cantor.

because once again, IOKIYAR. And with his having a listenership of pea brains with 15 second attention spans, it will always be this way.

Operation Chaos was born primarily for the purpose assuming Obama was going to be the nominee at the get-go of this,” Limbaugh explained on his show. “He needs to be bloodied up politically since McCain is not going to do it. Since the Republican Party is not going to be on the field in this way, somebody’s gotta bloody up Obama. The only person that can do it is Hillary, and she can’t do it if she’s not in the race — and so the purpose was Operation Chaos was to keep her in the race and to have her bloody up Obama in the process of staying in the race.”

I seriously doubt there was that much crossover, let alone from the black community in MS. Trying to get folks there to even turn out in a general is hard enough, let alone in a primary, and let alone a separate run-off.

The open primary trick is--was--just another way to cement majority rule in the south. Until now, Republicans used it to pick who they wished to run against, and have used the system in exactly that way for at least 40 years.

So now the weapon gets taken away from them and they're crying that it's painful. But only the daftest of the knuckle-draggers will propose to get rid of it, because they recognize its utility for themselves.

If we had a Democratic primary between a real progressive candidate and an establishment one in an open primary state, and republican voters swung the nomination to the latter, many of us would be upset. Although crossover voting would be legal, I would not like the idea that republicans had possibly played a critical role in keeping the real progressive from being our candidate.

That said, it is great that the "crazier-than-thou" republican did not win their nomination and their intraparty freakout burns hotter than ever.

Closed primaries undoubtedly have their share of problems, too, which may be why states seem to be getting away from them.
