Four same-sex couples issued marriage licenses, wed in St. Louis

Source: LGBTQ Nation

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay announced Thursday that marriage licenses were issued to four same-sex couples by St. Louis Recorder of Deeds Sharon Carpenter on Wednesday evening, coinciding with the one year anniversary of the Defense of Marriage Act being struck down.

The four couples were then married at City Hall as St. Louis mounts a direct challenge to the state’s same-sex marriage ban.

“St. Louis is a city that doesn’t tolerate discrimination,” said Slay, standing beside the couples. “We are sending a message on what’s right, and I can’t think of anything more right than this.”

The ceremonies were performed in Mayor Slay’s office and officiated by Municipal Judge Joseph Murphy. Carpenter issued the marriage licenses to the couples, despite Missouri’s 2004 constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

Missouri voters in 2004 approved a state constitutional amendment limiting marriage to one man and one woman...

Since then, there has been no effort by Republican legislative leaders to reconsider the gay marriage ban. But Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon again said on Thursday that it should be put to another vote, and he supports repealing it. He said there has been a "strong march toward a positive arc of history" on minds being changed about gay marriage.

(snip)

Last year, Nixon announced that Missouri would accept joint income tax returns from legally married gay couples, mirroring a new policy by the federal Internal Revenue Service.

Slay, Nixon and Koster are Democrats. Because of Missouri's term limits, Nixon can't seek another term as governor.

So who is a fucking idiot??

I don't think doing one's job (to uphold the state's laws, no matter how odious one finds them personally) is reprehensible or playing politics to cover his ass in November. It's called DOING YOUR JOB. His very public statements about his OWN views on gay marriage are decidedly risky in Missouri...

From your link...
"Koster says he personally supports marriage equality... He said in a written statement that many people have changed their minds about marriage in the past decade but that it is his duty as attorney general to defend Missouri’s laws."

(FYI, Missouri is largely conservative, except for the overwhelmingly Democratic cities of St. Louis, Kansas City & Columbia.)

And they did their jobs quite well. And look where it's gotten us on marriage equality.

Sometime when something is unconstitutional you just have to come out and say it and stand up and say this is law is unconstitutional and I will not defend it.

You can defend the AG all you want. He is wrong and will be on the wrong side of history. But hey, that's his choice.
