WASHINGTON (AP) A giant food service company that bumped thousands of college cafeteria workers from its health plan earlier this year now says it's backtracking.
Sodexo had justified its original decision by saying it was aligning corporate policies with the requirements of President Barack Obama's health care law. But the move fueled a union organizing drive and campus protests.
Now Sodexo's experience could be a cautionary tale for other employers looking to blame "Obamacare" for benefit reductions.
Julie Peterson, the company's vice president for benefits, tells The Associated Press the latest policy shift will restore eligibility for health care and other benefits next year to many of the affected workers.
The Obama administration says nothing in the health care law requires an employer to drop coverage.

(34,661 posts)Sodexo has a history of screwing their employees. French Company run out of Canada to hide their ownership of one of the most egregious service company in the U.S.. Watch and see what happens with Aramark. Ms. Peterson is a real work of art. Brain dead from the get go. As jobs come on line, these two companies will get clobbered, and, justifiably so.

(1 post)I am a sodexo worker, I work for food service in a college. We received a letter in July stating that our benefits would be restored and we would be reclassified as full time employees in 2015. Today, November 6, 2014, we received another letter stating that we do NOT qualify for benefits as we did not meet the 30 hr a week average for a 52 week period. Looks like somebody lied to get the heat off of their back.
