Dick Cheney Says Obama Cuts Defense to Spend on Food Stamps
Source: NBC.com
Former Vice President Dick Cheney says the Obama administration is cutting defense to spend money on food stamps. He made the remark Thursday night at an energy industry trade show in Billings, Montana, as part of a critique of President Barack Obamas plans to withdraw American forces from Afghanistan in 2016.
Cheney said: When I was secretary, we had basically a two-war strategy. We had to maintain sufficient forces to be able to fight two wars at once. He switched that. Now were going to have a one-war strategy. And thats all being done as a rationale to justify further deep cuts in the defense budget so he can allocate that money to food stamps or whatever else he wants to spend it on.

Cheney's Multi-Million Dollar Revolving Door
News: As Bush Sr.'s secretary of defense, Dick Cheney steered millions of dollars in government business to a private military contractor -- whose parent company just happened to give him a high-paying job after he left the government.

EXCERPT...
In 1992, the Pentagon, then under Cheney's direction, paid Texas-based Brown & Root Services $3.9 million to produce a classified report detailing how private companies -- like itself -- could help provide logistics for American troops in potential war zones around the world. BRS specializes in such work; from 1962 to 1972, for instance, the company worked in the former South Vietnam building roads, landing strips, harbors, and military bases. Later in 1992, the Pentagon gave the company an additional $5 million to update its report. That same year, BRS won a massive, five-year logistics contract from the US Army Corps of Engineers to work alongside American GIs in places like Zaire, Haiti, Somalia, Kosovo, the Balkans, and Saudi Arabia.
After Bill Clinton's election cost Cheney his government job, he wound up in 1995 as CEO of Halliburton Company, the Dallas-based oil services giant -- which just happens to own Brown & Root Services. Since then, Cheney has collected more than $10 million in salary and stock payments from the company. In addition, he is currently the company's largest individual shareholder, holding stock and options worth another $40 million. Those holdings have undoubtedly been made more valuable by the ever-more lucrative contracts BRS continues to score with the Pentagon.
Between 1992 and 1999, the Pentagon paid BRS more than $1.2 billion for its work in trouble spots around the globe. In May of 1999, the US Army Corps of Engineers re-enlisted the company's help in the Balkans, giving it a new five-year contract worth $731 million.

Must've been an, eh, awkward moment for the draft dodger. Then, of course, a big cash bonus from Halliburton has long since made that hurt go away. A new heart also must help.
As CEO he almost brought the company into bankruptcy, he was so inefficient. So, once he plac ed HIMSELF into the VP position, it was payback time. And how! Low life, with lots of money is STILL a low-life. Now he has started one of these money making conservative money raising scams like Rove enriches himself with. Cheney and vicious Lizzie are quite a team. Death and destruction are always on their agenda. He will live forever, just like Bush Sr. Bleed taxpayers for every last cent. Besides, the Devil does not want competition like Dickless in his territory.

Except for FY 1991, when the TOA budget increased by 1.7 percent, the Cheney budgets showed negative real growth: -2.9 percent in 1990, -9.8 percent in 1992, and -8.1 percent in 1993. (57,936 posts)The food stamps really aren't the problem. It was Bush's two wars off-budget that put our country in such extreme death that the Republicans had to harp about it endlessly.
Oh -- the two wars off-budget, lowering taxes for the rich and exporting all our heavy industry, all the industry that made our money for the many, many years prior to Reagan, that put us into debt.
Essentially, we fought to wars with folks very far from us, gave all our savings to our rich Uncle Joe and quit work. That's what we did. But isn't Cheney some kind of economic genius in the view of the press. He's got the economic sense of a 3-year-old in a cnady store with a dollar in his pocket.
Why is ANYONE interested in what Cheney says. He is a has-been, a loser, not very bright really. Please don't post anything more about Cheney on DU. You are just encouraging the press. His words stir up controversy and the press oves it.

Military families were more reliant on food stamps in 2013 than in any previous year, according to a Department of Defense (DOD) review that found over $100 million in food stamps spending at military grocery stores last year.
The DOD-run stores, known as commissaries, sell food to active-duty and retired military personnel and their families at prices that are lower than what private grocers charge. Nearly $104 million of the $6.2 billion in total revenue the commissaries brought in during fiscal year 2013 came from food stamps.
Food stamp usage at the stores has more than quadrupled since 2007 as the recession compounded the already difficult financial situation faced by military families. New soldiers with a child and a spouse earn $20,000 per year in pay, according to CNN Money, and the frequent relocations and disruptions inherent to the lifestyle of a military family make it harder for military spouses to find jobs and bring in supplementary income. The unemployment rate for young military spouses was 30 percent in 2012. Retired military servicemen and women who joined up after 9/11 have a 10 percent unemployment rate, which also contributes to the elevated food stamp figures at DOD commissaries, and nearly a million working-age veterans lived in poverty in 2010.

No bids, no competition, inflated replacement costs, and less than stellar performance in the field with little or no repercussion. All they needed was a war, and Cheney had his profiteers at the gate once his contrived war was underway. Yes, a lot of the trillion+ $$$ Cheney and his band of neocons squandered in Iraq could have been better spent. But god forbid if it had gone to repair outdated infrastructure, or help those who needed it the most. Food Stamps? Oh the horrors!
