Ukraine president ends ceasefire with rebels
Source: BBC
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has ended a unilateral ceasefire with separatists in the east, saying: "We will attack, we will free our land."
Mr Poroshenko said the chance for peace was lost because of the "criminal activities" of pro-Russian militants.
The shaky ceasefire between the Ukrainian authorities and separatist groups had been due to end on Monday evening.
Both sides have accused each other of violating the truce.

(3,982 posts)Of course Kyiv says that. Reports on the ground say something else.

(3,982 posts)There was no way that trust was going to be built without having the provisions in law that were promised in the plan. They could do that at *any* time, even before an agreement is put in place.
It has been evident from the beginning that there are powers in Kyiv that simply don't want any compromise. They have lied over and over again about what they are going to /willing to do and *never* follow through.
The real question is *why*?

(8,821 posts)Poroshenko dares not defy that power block. They won't vote him out of office, they'll chase him out of town like they did Yanukovich. Who will stop them? They are the army now.

(73 posts)Cease fires , at least from my historical understanding are intended to give breathing room and time to initiate plans. The full plan will take time to initiate just by the very nature of some of the points in it.
One could argue that more could be done by the President to engender trust, but when people are dying, the political will for that(and to offer more unilaterally at least at first) gets harder, and I'm not unsympathetic to that. That's what makes cease fires such an important part in many of these situations imo.
Depending upon which side you believe, one faction declared a cease fire and the other side didn't acknowledge it. A ceasefire is an essential part of the plan. If the other side won't even acknowledge that, I can understand the hesitancy to move forward even more on the plan if an essential component of it hasn't been satisfied(I will say sometimes it's less than clear as to whom shot at whom first)
We'll see what happens, but there's going to be an endgame at some point in the future(this won't go on for the entirety of human existence) it will just be a matter of whom gets the ball rolling, and if the other side play ball.

(42,239 posts)Ukrainian forces have launched a full-scale military operation against pro-Russia separatists in the east, hours after a ceasefire ended.
Rebel bases and strongholds were under attack from aircraft and artillery, government officials said.
The 10-day ceasefire ended on Monday evening, with President Petro Poroshenko saying "criminal elements" had thwarted the chance for peace.
Western leaders and Russia had urged him to prolong the truce.

(42,239 posts)Ukrainian government forces launched air strikes and artillery assaults on pro-Russian separatists in eastern regions on Tuesday, a military spokesman said, after President Petro Poroshenko announced he would not renew a ceasefire.
Poroshenko said in an early morning announcement that government forces would renew offensive operations against rebels and "free our lands", hours after a ceasefire to allow for peace talks with the pro-Russian separatists had expired.
"After the President's speech, the ATO (Anti-Terrorist Operation) went into action. We opened artillery fire, carried out air strikes at the strategic points of the terrorists and places where they are concentrated," military spokesman Oleksiy Dmytrashkovsky was reported as saying by Interfax news agency.
Dmytrashkovsky said rebels had fired on an SU-25 attack aircraft, damaging it, but the plane had manage to land safely at its air base. He denied a rebel report that a military helicopter had been brought down.
