Obama to propose $75 million in federal funds for police body cameras

Source: STL Post-Dispatch

President Obama will propose $75 million in federal matching funds for police body cameras today, and he will conduct three separate meetings on Ferguson-related issues.

Two members of the Ferguson Commission are expected to be in the meetings, but the Missouri congressional delegation is not involved.

The police body camera funds, to be handed out over three years, could result in 50,000 body cameras on local police officers around the country, said senior White House officials, who refused to allow their names to be published. Local police departments can apply for the matching funds in a program modeled after one that equipped officers around the county with body armor.

It's part of a proposed $263 million, three-year initiative that will also provide more local police training and broaden the federal Department of Justice's role in that training, White House officials told reporters in a background briefing this morning.

Standardize hiring practices and filter out these nutjobs. Retrain all current officers to use non lethal or aggressive tactics unless absolutely necessary. And personally, all unarmed civilian deaths caused by a police officer should result in the immediate dismissal of the officer from the police force, no exceptions.

for the sake of collecting forensic data, drug testing, etc. If there could be an issue of wrongful death, it's so convenient that the police do not now collect this.

Unarmed does not mean not dangerous.

Automatic dismissal, no exceptions is too extreme. Police officers have been beaten to death before, look up El Paso police officer Jonathan Molina. The man who murdered Molina was technically unarmed.

I would go for automatic indictment on a minimum of manslaughter charges though. That way there can be a full and fair trial, and if it does come out to be justified the officer does not lose his career.

No matter how much video is shot or evidence is presented, people who hate cops will blame the cops. People who love cops will blame the dead guy.

Such is the way it works when people ignore the evidence for their own reasons.

Do you know which of the Ferguson protest leaders will be at the White House?

the federal government should foot the entire bill for this. It sounds like a good start. I just hope that the places that get the grants are places that have these sort of issues. Places like Ferguson should be higher priority than, say, rural Vermont, though that's not always the case with these sort of grants.
