Russia Says NATO Destabilizes North Europe, Aid Draws Ire

Source: Bloomberg

By Aliaksandr Kudrytski and James G. Neuger Dec 1, 2014 2:27 PM ET

Russia accused NATO of trying to destabilize northern Europe as the alliance’s chief said the latest aid convoy for Ukraine was another sign of Russian disrespect for its neighbor’s border.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization military drills and its transfer of warplanes capable of carrying nuclear weapons to the Baltic states are a “reality which is extremely negative,” Interfax reported Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksey Meshkov as saying today.

“They are trying to shake up the most stable region in the world, the north of Europe,” Meshkov said. “In this regard, Russia’s leadership is and will be taking all steps to ensure the security of Russia and its citizens.”

Ukraine and its allies blame Russia for stoking the conflict in the east of Ukraine, which has killed more than 4,300 people and left at least 10,000 wounded. The government in Moscow denies involvement. After delivering more than 1,200 metric tons of cargo to the Donetsk and Luhansk regions without consulting the government in Kiev yesterday, Russia may soon dispatch a ninth aid convoy, the Tass news service reported, citing the Emergencies Ministry.

Last Russian Combat Troops Are Withdrawn From Poland

Published: October 29, 1992

The last Russian combat troops stationed in Poland pulled out today, ending a presence that reinforced Moscow's political and military domination of the country for almost half a century.

The Russian flag was lowered at a naval base in the northwestern port of Swinoujscie and, to the music of a military band, four Russian naval vessels sailed into the Baltic Sea with the last combat soldiers on board.

"Polish sovereignty has finally been confirmed," President Lech Walesa of Poland said in a statement.

Some 6,000 noncombat troops in communications and transport units will stay in Poland until the end of 1993 to help the evacuation of Russian troops from eastern Germany.

U.S. troops to remain in Baltics, Poland next year

VILNIUS Sun Nov 23, 2014 1:48pm EST

(Reuters) - The United States will keep troops in Poland and the Baltic states for at least the next year as tensions with Russia remain, the commander of U.S. land forces in Europe said on Sunday.

Several hundred U.S. troops were deployed in Poland and the three Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia earlier this year after Russia seized Ukraine's Crimea region in March. The deployment was part of Washington's efforts to reassure the nervous eastern European allies that NATO would offer protection from any Russian threat.

Originally planned until the end of this year, the "persistent presence" mission of overlapping units on rotation is going to continue, Lieutenant-General Frederick Ben Hodges, Commanding General of U.S. Army Europe told reporters in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.

"We have planned rotations out through next year. Units are designated that will continue to do this", Hodges said.

The same rhetoric as the Bush era.

People are as entitled to a difference opinion now as they were back then.

Poland was in Iraq, and the majority didn't think it was justified.

It's one of destabilization and destruction.

There isn't even any pretense of being interested in nation building or implementing liberal democracy any more.

We have nothing to show for our interventions except chaos, ruins and refugees.

When Russia's economy is destroyed by the sanctions and low oil prices perhaps our allies will send in the extremists to finish them off.

and overthrowing the Gadaffi regime has unleashed terrorism across the region.

Libya, Iraq and Syria are in chaos. Afghanistan is on the verge of reverting back to chaos.

FWIW I supported the R2P intervention in Libya but now regret it and think we were played.

2. Iraq II was no Nato-mission.

3. The bombing-campaign against ISIS is no Nato-campaign either, just because several individual members take part.

Sometimes when you rise up in armed rebellion you get killed. That's a chance you take.

Now, Libya is a lawless state, Islamic militias running around everywhere, Libyan weapons leaking out all over the place, and Al Qaeda getting a new stronghold.

As it stands now even the bloodiest day in Libya is better than a day in many Latin American countries. One reason gas prices are low, in fact, is because Libya is producing again.
