Columbia grad union sees ‘an emerging trend’

Source: Capital NY

By Conor Skelding

Columbia University graduate students seeking to form a union said today they think they might be part of an "emerging trend" of unionization at private colleges and universities.

"We certainly hope it's an emerging trend, and we're very excited to be part of it," said Paul Katz, a second-year Ph.D. candidate in history, and a member of Graduate Workers of Columbia.

Katz spoke today on WBAI's "Morning Show," with co-host Christy Thornton, herself an N.Y.U. history Ph.D. candidate represented by GSOC.

"There's no doubt that we were inspired by the efforts of others at N.Y.U., at Yale, and certainly at public universities across the country," he said. Some graduate students at the University of Chicago are also working for recognition.
