BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- Berkeley police say nine people were arrested as crowds marched for a third night in a row to protest grand jury decisions not to indict white police officers in the deaths of two unarmed black men.
Demonstrators blocked traffic on both sides of Interstate 80, while another group stood and sat on tracks, forcing an Amtrak train to stop Monday night.
Officer Jennifer Coats said early Tuesday that police estimated the crowd at about 1,500. She says eight adults and one juvenile were taken into custody during the mostly peaceful protests. There were no injuries and no reports of damaged property.
Coats says the California Highway Patrol may have made more arrests as a smaller group broke away and went onto the interstate. CHP arrest numbers are not immediately available.
