Senate cancels vote on Obama Social Security pick

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's pick to head the Social Security Administration has run into more trouble after Senate Democrats canceled a procedural vote on her nomination.

Obama nominated Carolyn W. Colvin to a six-year term as commissioner in June, and Colvin's nomination cleared one procedural hurdle in the Senate Saturday. However, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., canceled an upcoming vote, making it likely Colvin won't get a vote until next year, when Republicans take control of the Senate.

Colvin's nomination would have taken up valuable floor time as the Senate rushes to finish its year-end business. Senators could speed the process but that would require a bipartisan agreement.

Colvin's nomination first ran into trouble when a group of Republican senators said they would try to block it while investigators look into a $300 million computer project at the agency.

In 2016 there is going to be a 20% reduction in SSDI payments so I'm sure the person will get a lot of hate mail.

See:

Currently the SSDI trust fund is projected to be exhausted sometime around 2016-2017

Before this happens though there will probably be a re-balancing redirecting funds that are currently going into regular
Social Security (SSOASI) instead into SSDI (this has happened a few times in the past).

They are going to say if they do that then Baby boomers will have to take a SSR cut. They will play each side against the other along with anecdotes of SSDI fraud and abuse.

Thanks for your post.

There is no reason to be getting a bunch of folks on SSDI all upset over something that will likely NOT be an issue in 2016-2017.

People receiving SSDI have worked for many years to receive this benefit and are the disabled Americans amongst us that receive, in most cases, no other benefits in far too many cases whereas SSI recipients are in an entirely different boat altogether.

Panic is NOT needed. Thank you again!

1.6% of FICA taxes are dedicated to SSDI. The rest is towards retirement and Medicare Part A.
