US marine charged with murder of Philippine transgender woman

Ellen Cruz

Manila (dpa) - A US marine was charged Monday with the murder of a Philippine transgender woman in October.

Scott Pemberton, 19, is suspected of killing Jeffrey "Jennifer" Laude, 26, found dead in a hotel room in Olongapo City on October 11.

She was last seen with Pemberton whom she reportedly met at a bar.

Pemberton is in US custody within the Philippines' central military base in Manila.

Olongapo City Prosecutor Emilie delos Santos said it was too soon to tell whether Pemberton would be moved to Philippine custody now he has been formally charged.

The case has led to renewed calls for the lifting of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), the pact that regulates US forces stationed in the Philippines, whereby US authorities retain a degree of legal jurisdiction over their troops.

so .. after undressing, it turns out that the hooker had the wrong equipment. Why is this enough to kill?

It is sort of like in a restaurant - the waitperson brings you the wrong order -- just send it back and wait for what you desired.

That's why. Insane killers seem to do well there.

FWIW I've only been with one person in my life (happily married for almost 11 years to my wife). I also am only interested in women. I also don't get the hook up / pick up culture so if I were to find myself single again I'm not sure what to do.

Then again I've seen the countless heartache threads of "when do I tell him or her" on the trans message board I also frequent. My wife knew from the start so I avoided that one myself but still feel empathy for others in that situation. Nevertheless, this is largely a stereotype that trans people hook up with some dude and out pops a penis and the dude beats her up or kills her. There are also men who KNOWINGLY hook up with a trans woman because they are into the whole idea and then afterwards feel guilty or ashamed and then beat the woman up. There are still others who use the into a rage excuse because they'll knowingly hook up with a trans woman with the excuse to beat her up or kill her because they want to rob her. This is very possible what happened to Angie Zapata who was murdered in 2008.

Also, the "not quite yet a gal" although I know you used quotes is very offensive, especially to non-op women like myself.

Anyway, please leave the crying game stereotype out. It may or may not be true, but it's victim blaming.

The Status of Forces Agreement (SFA) says in most cases the US decides the punishment. Over a decade ago there was the incident with two Korean girls killed by a tank. It happened well before I got here, but let to a lot of resentment against the US military (and was only compounded by the two wars started by W.).
