More than 40 Australian Muslim groups condemn Sydney café siege

Source: AFP

More than 40 Australian Muslim groups on Monday jointly condemned a siege at a Sydney cafe in which hostages were taken and an Islamic flag was displayed.

"We reject any attempt to take the innocent life of any human being or to instill fear and terror into their hearts," they said in a statement, adding that it was a "despicable act".

Muslim leaders condemn Sydney siege

AUSTRALIAN Islamic leaders have united to condemn the actions of a gunman responsible for the unfolding hostage crisis at a cafe in central Sydney, amid fears of possible reprisal attacks against Muslims.

Responding to the crisis, Grand Mufti Ibrahim Abu Mohamed, the country's highest Islamic office holder, said he felt devastated.

"The Grand Mufti and the Australian National Imam Council condemn this criminal act unequivocally and reiterate that such actions are denounced in part and in whole in Islam," Professor Mohamed said in a statement. "We along (with) the wide Australian society await the results of the investigation about the identity of the perpetrators and their underlying motivations behind the criminal act."

Australian Federation of Islamic Councils past president, Rehin Ghauri, said he was gravely concerned for his "Australian brothers and sisters". "Holding people hostage like this is totally, absolutely and honestly un-Islamic," Mr Ghauri told AAP.

Twitter users are kicking back against Islamophobia in the wake of the Sydney siege. Pict

ANTI-ISLAMIC sentiment has flooded social media in the wake of the Sydney siege, but there is a campaign gathering steam that will restore your faith in humanity.

A Twitter movement, #illridewithyou, has sprouted with everyday Australians offering to ride on buses and trains with Muslims, or give them a lift to work tomorrow, in order to keep them safe.

The grassroots campaign began with this thoughtful tweet from @sirtessa:

She received such a strong response from the Twittersphere that she suggested the #illridewithyou hashtag. The idea quickly took off, with people throughout Australia pledging their support for Australia’s Muslim community.......

by Islamists, people scream out, "where are moderate Muslims in this? Why won't they condemn these attacks? Why won't they condemn terrorism?" Well, it's happening right now. So we're now waiting on the asshole to either give himself up or die, whichever happens first.

U.S. officials kept a close eye on the developing hostage situation at a café in Sydney, Australia.

President Obama had been briefed on the hostage crisis by his terrorism advisor Lisa Monaco, according to multiple reports.

A State Department spokeswoman said late Sunday night that they were “closely following” the developing hostage situation in Sydney, Australia.

“As Australia law enforcement officials are addressing the threat, we have advised U.S. citizens and others avoid the area around Martin Place until further notice,” spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

She also confirmed that the U.S. Consulate in Sydney had been evacuated, along with other buildings in the vicinity of the Martin Place mall. The consulate is located close to the cafe.............

Until Muslims stop their mullahs from fiery sermons of "Islam will dominate the world" and unless and until Muslims start informing the authorities about the radicalized amongst them as prophylaxis, the condemnations after the fact, while on the right track, remain insufficient.

As an analogy, consider the child abuse scandal in the Catholic church. I would not be overly impressed with a bishop who merely issued a statement condemning the abuse of children. Such statements by themselves have a limited value.

But I would be very impressed with a bishop who aggressively investigated possible abuse cases, and immediately reported them to the civil authorities.
