And most recently, he was charged with more than 50 allegations of indecent and sexual assault relating to time allegedly spent as a self-proclaimed "spiritual healer" who dealt with black magic at a premises in western Sydney more than a decade ago.

Monis, who has also gone by the names of Sheikh Haron and Mohammad Hassan Manteghi, was born in Iran and most recently has been living at Bexley North in Sydney's south.

SYDNEY, Dec 16 (Reuters) - An Iranian refugee convicted of sexual assault and known for sending hate letters to the families of Australian soldiers killed overseas is the armed man holding an unknown number of hostages in a Sydney cafe, a police source said on Tuesday.

Man Haron Monis, an Iranian refugee and self-styled sheik, remained holed up in the cafe some 15 hours after the siege began.

7. Monis is currently charged with 40 instances of indecent and sexual assault against women.

Dec 2014

Monis was first charged in April 2014 with the indecent and sexual assault of a woman in western Sydney in 2002. News of his arrest prompted more victims to come forward.

Police allege that Monis was a self-proclaimed "spiritual healer" operating out of premises on Station Street at Wentworthville. He claimed to be an expert in astrology, numerology, meditation and black magic.

Monis was also on bail, charged with being an accessory, before and after the fact, to the murder of his ex-wife.

A shit-load more than your garden variety Jihadist in IMO, - particularly easy for the Australian muslims to disown, without controvery.

14. He was a political refugee from Iran
Tue Dec 16, 2014, 12:21 AM
Dec 2014

He was granted political refugee status after fleeing from Iran for espousing "a liberal view of Islam", once said that Australian was "heaven" compared to Iran and other countries in the Middle East (source: http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/religionreport/new-cardinals-for-rome-george-bush-muslims-in/3478556). He also claims to have recently "converted" from Shiism to Sunni Islam.

As crazy as this guy was, he was consistent in being vocal against the Iranian regime, so I don't think any country in the world would have considered deporting him back to Iran.

That should inspire all to jihad (insert incredibly disgusted eye roll here.) Asshat. I've said it before, and I'll say it again--religious fundamentalism of any stripe is the most toxic, poisonous, evil force on the planet. Nothing good ever comes from it.

This feels more like a garden variety "lone wolf" charlatan nut playing suicide by cop while masquerading as a "legitimate" jihadist.

15. I'm not sure if this guy can even be classified as a fundamentalist
Tue Dec 16, 2014, 12:38 AM
Dec 2014

Well, maybe the "mental" part in fundamentalist. Looking at his personal history:

* Fled Iran, labels himself as a political refugee by claiming he was involved with the Ministry of Intelligence and Security, then professes love of Australian and other western countries (source);
* Dealt in "astrology, numerology, meditation and black magic", leading to sexual assault charges (source);
* Possibly involved in the murder of his wife, and then claims that the Australian security agency and the Iranian secret police were both trying to frame him for political reasons (source);
* And just recently goes from being a Shiite to a Sunni;

This guy seems more like an attention seeking opportunist, a fraudster, than a believer in any ideology (other than some crazy form of it that he has created for himself).

A narcissist nut job who was facing a long prison sentence for being an accessory to murder and for sexual assault, decide to jump on the IS bandwagon and go out with a bang by taking a few innocents with him. Just a shame he got his wish in the end.

P.S: I'm Australian.
