U.S. asks Vatican for help with Guantanamo inmates

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - The United States, which is seeking ways to close Guantanamo Bay prison camp and to transfer inmates to third countries, asked the Vatican on Monday for help finding "humanitarian solutions" for inmates, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry made the request at a meeting with Vatican counterpart Cardinal Pietro Parolin at the Holy See.

While the Vatican gave no details on what kind of help the U.S. was seeking, a senior State Department official said Kerry reiterated Obama's commitment to closing the center and described recent progress in diplomatic efforts to transfer detainees to third countries, including Uruguay.

The United States asked for "the Holy See's assistance in seeking adequate humanitarian solutions for current inmates", Lombardi said in comments published on the Vatican Radio website.

Maybe they want Frank to see if there's room at the inn in Argentina...? These wouldn't be the first to be resettled in the Americas, after all....Uruguay helped out and took a bunch recently.

Problem is, who knows if all these detainees are actually bad guys. We held shitloads of them for years, only to release them already.

All those empty beds, maybe the RCC could mold them from militant Muslims into powerful humble Catholic priests.

Both groups are "true believers".

What could possibly go wrong?
