MIAMI (AP) Cuban opposition leaders from the island joined Cuban American politicians and activists on Saturday, pledging to oppose President Barack Obama's plan to normalize relations with the communist nation and disputing the notion that their community is split by a generational divide.
"The opposition will continue fighting, with or without Barack Obama," Cuban activist Jorge Luis Garcia Perez, known by his nickname "Antunez," said to cheers.
The gathering at a Little Havana park drew more than 200 people, largely older Cuban exiles who chanted "Obama, traitor!" and waved U.S. and Cuban flags. Some expressed disappointment that the protest was not larger; the demonstrators filled about half the park.
"The mentality is, 'Hey, we're going to be able to buy Cuban cigars and rum.' Well, it's not a happy thing for us," said Armando Merino, 68, who came to the U.S. at age 14. "I'm here because for the Cuban people, my family in Cuba, they are not able to protest."

Screw these malcontents.
One of the few things Obama has done right.

(95,337 posts)The government of Cuba has not done anything bad towards the USA in the past 40+ years and for the most part has been a pretty docile nation.
Are there human rights violations in Cuba? Sure, but how can the United States be the one to sit and judge them?
If these people want nothing to do with Cuba then go for it. But do not hold two nations as hostages over your anger. This is the 21st Century and it's time to move on.

(1,407 posts)Perspectives may have been different. I don't know enough to agree or disagree but the thinking is now you have Cuba having tried reforms, because things have slowly gotten worse over time, that haven't really worked (much in the same way as Gorbachev in the 80s) since they can't/won't give the people full freedoms. The feeling now is that this is not the time to open things up with Cuba and prop them back up when indicators show change may slowly be on the way.
