Florida police officer shot dead; suspect in custody

Source: USA Today

PINIELLAS COUNTY, Fla. - A police officer was shot and killed early Sunday in Tarpon Springs, Fla.
The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. at an apartment complex on Grand Boulevard in Tarpon Springs, about 25 miles from Tampa. Police were originally called for a noise ordinance complaint with a suspect banging on residential doors. When police arrived, the suspect shot one of the officers and then attempted to flee in a vehicle.

Police caught up with the suspect and he is now in custody.

A news conference will be held later this morning to provide further details.

The shooting comes just a day after two New York City police officers were killed in an ambush-style shooting.

That appears to be an older photo than the other one. For what it's worth, I can't determine what ethnicity he is (if that becomes an issue). The name does sound Latino to me, though.

Florida police officer killed; suspect charged with murder

TAMPA, Fla. (Reuters) - A veteran Florida police officer was shot and killed while on duty early Sunday by a man described as transient, according to law enforcement officials, who gave no motive for the suspect now charged with murder.

Officer Charles Kondek, 45, was gunned down in Tarpon Springs, about 30 miles northwest of Tampa, after responding to a call for service around 2 a.m. EST, the Tarpon Springs Police Department said.

The officer later died of his injuries at a local hospital, the police department said.

In the Florida case, police said they arrested Marco Antonio Parilla Jr., 23, on a charge of first-degree murder.
