Killings of 2 New York officers trigger backlash

Source: AP-Excite

By RIK STEVENS and VERENA DOBNIK

NEW YORK (AP) — Civil rights leaders Sunday condemned the ambush killings of two New York police officers and expressed fear that the backlash over the bloodshed could derail the protest movement that has grown out of the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

In the raw hours following the killing of the officers, police union officials and politicians accused those who have protested the deaths of Garner and Brown of fanning anti-police fervor. Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolman's Benevolent Association in New York, said there was "blood on the hands" of demonstrators and elected officials who have criticized police tactics.

The Garner and Brown families issued statements repudiating the officers' killings, while civil rights leaders took to the airwaves to try to put some distance between the movement and the crime.

"To link the criminal insanity of a lone gunman to the peaceful protests and aspirations of many people across the country, including the attorney general, the mayor and even the president, is simply not fair," NAACP President Cornell William Brooks said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Now, there are buckets of blood on the hands of any cop who enforces the blue line silence.

The cop killer is a complete asshole. He was obviously crazy and deranged and deserved to die himself. No one disagrees I'm sure. Let's hope things calm down, people can come to the table and talk about reforms and cooler heads prevail.

4. So, you don't believe that killing in self defense when there is no other option is not acceptable?

Granted, that's clearly not the case here, but you made your statement in the absolute.

Jesus suggested we do no violence even to those who intend violence against us. Interesting concept.

... but there are times when, the only way to prevent yourself or someone else from being killed, is to kill the person who is threatening to do harm.

it stinks real bad, I just don't want to believe that New York cops will go this low just to take away pressure from public outcry about their over aggressive behavior toward blacks in particular or ethnic minorities in this country.

This type of action is what pisses me off, and they make it obvious by instantly blaming demonstrators for something they ffooking staged. What law abiding citizen fearful of police brutality will attack two policeman because they want to make a point? unless the culprits were being directed by shady players who wants the protest of police brutality go away, I hope this does not hold back the nationwide demonstration which have been successful in large parts.

7. NY police didn't kill two of their own, or conspire to do so.

The killer had shot his girlfriend and apparently wanted to go out with a bang.

I don't think these killings will impact peaceful protesters, but on the other hand, it is hardly going to make cops less trigger-happy.

And possibly violence against him. He is still a cop, so he should be suspended and have his badge and gun removed. It's no different than the head of the military telling troops to turn their backs n the president. It's dangerous.,

could have triggered the attack on her.

And the hatred toward police in the past few weeks easily could have led to this killing. And perhaps even more.

Don't all the flamers realize how easy it is to trigger a killing by someone? So he is lunatic. So what. All the protests and all the shouting in these days of instant messaging are a trigger.

I might have joined in protests, but screams of "PIGS" and grouping all police officers with some very contemptible ones is not cool IMHO.
Until we are all saints, we need officers of the law to enforce things in a reasonable way. What is needed is better screening and training.

12. Maybe police should'nt be engaging in activities that generate hostilities toward them?

Law enforcement is not innocent in all of this. And to turn around play the victim is shameful. It's not the protesters, nor what the President or what the Mayor of NY said- that triggered this.

The police triggered this. They triggered it by making it all too common place to kill innocent civilians across the country.
