"Life is short, break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly, laugh uncontrollably, and never regret anything that made you smile. Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." –Mark Twain

“Good judgement is the result of experience, and experience is the result of bad judgement.”

“I have a higher and grander standard of principle than George Washington. He could not lie; I can, but I won’t.”

“I am an old man,”
Twain commented in his fading hours. “I am an old man and have known many troubles, most of which never happened.”

including the additions down thread.
He always strikes me as so modern -- not just the continuing relevance of his humor, but also even his English style. Even his books written in the mid-1800's have a clean, modern writing style. Always a pleasure to read him.

Thanks very much for this post, and for all the comments on the thread.
The perfect antidote to all the Stuff right now.

""Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it." – "putting us on"?? Did people say that in the 19th Century?
