Lee High name a disgrace (LTTE | VA)

... What Robert E. Lee did before or after the Civil War does not change the fact that he was a traitor to his country. No other single person bears more responsibility for the deaths of 2 percent of the then-population of America and the misery and suffering of the Civil War than Lee ... Abraham Lincoln and U. S. Grant hoped that by showing grace and magnanimity toward Lee and Davis and the defeated Confederacy that the nation's wounds would heal. Instead, a great myth arose that exists to this day of "northern aggression" and "states’ rights" as the cause of war. It is a disgrace and a blight on the community that Staunton's only public high school bears the name of Robert E. Lee. My father was a World War II veteran and graduate of Lee High. When he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, I was presented an American Flag, not a Confederate flag. The portrayal of Lee as a patriot is offensive to the millions of true patriots who served during and since the Civil War.
