Reclaiming Southern Pride
What the Confederate flag means to a southerner who refuses to embrace it

I moved from Houston, Texas, to Morristown, Tennessee, when I was 13 years old ... A high-school classmate of mine was wearing a T-shirt that bore it and some arrangement of the words rebel and pride. When I asked why he wore the shirt .. he simply said its about Southern pride ... I almost bought it ...
My dad told me last week that Id be offended if I were to return home ... Since the Confederate flag was removed from state capitol grounds in South Carolina .. it has proliferated ... You wouldnt believe it now ... Desegregation brought it out of closets and museums ...
That flag simply cannot be divorced from the white-supremacist, pro-slavery doctrine of the Confederacy ...
... It does more to divide the region than to unite it ...
