Reclaiming Southern Pride

What the Confederate flag means to a southerner who refuses to embrace it
TYLER BISHOP 6:07 AM ET

I moved from Houston, Texas, to Morristown, Tennessee, when I was 13 years old ... A high-school classmate of mine was wearing a T-shirt that bore it and some arrangement of the words “rebel” and “pride.” When I asked why he wore the shirt .. he simply said it’s about Southern pride ... I almost bought it ...

My dad told me last week that I’d be offended if I were to return home ... Since the Confederate flag was removed from state capitol grounds in South Carolina .. it has proliferated ... “You wouldn’t believe it now” ... Desegregation brought it out of closets and museums ...

That flag simply cannot be divorced from the white-supremacist, pro-slavery doctrine of the Confederacy ...

... It does more to divide the region than to unite it ...
