carson proposes to dump medicare along with obamacare

Republicans have fended off accusations for years that they'd gut Medicare for seniors and end the program "as we know it."

?w=300&h=200

Not Ben Carson. The former neurosurgeon acknowledges he would abolish the program altogether.

Carson, who now leads the GOP field in Iowa according to the latest Quinnipiac Poll, would eliminate the program that provides health care to 49 million senior citizens, as well as Medicaid, and replace it with a system of cradle-to-grave savings accounts which would be funded with $2,000 a year in government contributions. While rivals have been pummeled for proposing less radical changes, Carson hasn't faced the same scrutiny -- and his continued traction in polls has left GOP strategists and conservative health care wonks scratching their heads.

"This isn’t a borderline issue. The politics of this are horrific," said Doug Holtz-Eakin, head of the American Action Forum and health care adviser to Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign.

Carson's stance on the third-rail issue of Medicare is especially risky given his strength among elderly voters. In Iowa, Carson draws a quarter of the senior vote -- more than double any other candidate except Donald Trump, with whom he’s statistically tied among seniors. Carson’s support is even higher among voters between the ages of 55 and 64, who are on the verge of Medicare eligibility. He draws 34 percent of that age group, double Trump’s level of support, according to the Quinnipiac poll.

Right now, most people know very little about Ben Carson. They find him interesting because he's this brilliant, black neurosurgeon, and a conservative. This sort of person always generates interest among Republicans. "He's a black conservative!" Yes, how remarkable. And he benefits from Democratic accusations about being an Oreo, etc. This appeals to older white Americans who remember a time when respectable black people were polite and well spoken, with good manners and nice diction. Once they figure out Carson is after their favorite program, they'll start demanding to see his birth certificate. I don't see how the GOP can allow Carson to be the nominee. He an Trump are simply too dangerous, too vulnerable because of their views on social programs important to older voters.

Having him win the republican nomination would probably tear the party apart. Will the tea party accept a black candidate - as idiotic as he is?

But his views were formed on the streets of Detroit in his youth. He prides himself on being "different", and is also rather conceited. It's like people meet him, knowing he's a doctor, and then he says climate change is bunk. He likes to shock people, like his comment about never seeing a body with bullet holes that was as "devastating" as taking peoples guns away. His personality has nothing to do with being a doctor. He's always been an oddball. He likes it. Think of him more like a brilliant accountant who lives with him mom, wears funky hats, and tells dirty jokes.

Other than that, if Carson is ever elected president - run!
