Daisy Coleman: Assault survivor in Netflix film takes own life

Daisy Coleman, a sexual assault victim advocate and subject of the Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy, has taken her own life, according to her mother.

Ms Coleman, 23, was 14 when she had alleged she was raped at a party in 2012 in Maryville, Missouri.

Her case drew national attention as she spoke of being bullied after the alleged rape, but the charge against her alleged attacker was dropped.

She was reportedly found after her mother called police to check on her.

"She was my best friend and amazing daughter," her mother, Melinda Coleman, wrote on Facebook.

"I think she had to make make it seem like I could live without her. I can't.

"I wish I could have taken the pain from her! She never recovered from what those boys did to her and it's just not fair. My baby girl is gone."

Matthew Barnett

On January 7, 2012, a 14-year-old freshman at Maryville High School in Maryville, Missouri, was raped at a party hosted by senior Matthew Barnett.

The girl, Daisy Coleman, told investigators she had been brought to the party by Barnett and that he raped her. Charges, including sexual assault, were brought against Barnett in January 2012. The assault charge was suddenly dropped in March 2012, with Coleman and her family maintaining that he committed this heinous crime, reports The Kansas City Star.

Here’s what you should know about Barnett and his role in this disturbing story.

1. Shortly After She Started at Maryville High, Barnett Began Texting Daisy Coleman

Daisy Coleman became acquainted with Matthew Barnett in 2011 as Coleman began her freshman year. Barnett was a senior football player with the school’s team, the Spoofhounds, and she was a junior varsity cheerleader.

Barnett was a friend of Coleman’s older brother. Charlie Coleman told The Kansas City Star: “I told her to stay clear of that kid. But honestly, what teenage kid want to listen to her older brother?”

Despite her brother’s warnings, Daisy Coleman entered into a relationship of texting with Barnett. Days before Coleman was raped, Barnett had been a guest of Charlie’s at the Coleman family home, where a large group gathered to watch football.

One night in January 2012, Daisy told police, she became so intoxicated that she couldn't stand. She was then raped, while her friend filmed it on a phone and left her on her front porch in 22-degree weather.

Daisy's alleged rapist was a 17-year-old senior football player, Matthew Barnett. The morning after the party, Daisy's mother found Daisy on the front porch, hair frozen, in only a T-shirt and sweatpants.

Weeks after Daisy was found unconscious on her porch, the prosecutor, Robert Rice, dropped the rape charges against Matthew. The court cited a lack of evidence.

he should be the one dead!!

ETA: I changed my mind. I'd rather have him lying naked in a dark cell, strapped to a metal table, forever, with someone randomly coming in every once in a while (preferably while he's asleep), turning the lights on, and then smashing his nuts flat with a sledgehammer... every day, for the rest of his FUCKING LIFE!!!
