Why even hippies are abandoning the Greens (Sydney Sunday Telegraph)

... After 14 years of solid growth across all political levels, the Greens suffered a serious and humiliating backlash in last weekend's council elections. In Marrickville, where the Greens-led council supported controversial sanctions against Israel last year, there was a 7 per cent swing against them. In Woollahra it was a massive 12 per cent. In Warringah on Sydney's north shore, the Greens presence on council was completely wiped out. Former Warringah councillor Dr Conny Harris told Agenda she thought there was an "overall swing against the Greens because of federal policies". And in the inner west, an 11 per cent swing against the Greens in Leichhardt returned voters back to the traditional parties ...

"I do love the Greens, I love what they stand for," the 36-year-old says. "I adore Bob Brown and went to see him at the Writers' Festival but all I've wanted since I've lived here is the bloody roads fixed. Four times I've had to call the NRMA to fix the car, four sets of tyres. They are costing me money" ...

"The Israeli issue was problematic and an example of locals dabbling in something that should have been done at a federal level. If we had our time over again, we'd have done that differently" ...

There was also criticism the Greens in Leichhardt wanted to fix the world, tackling issues such as East Timor gas, Julian Assange and the global flow of refugees. Cafe owner Roy Crino from Grind on Norton Street says the consensus amongst the latte set is that the council failed to do what councils are supposed to do ...

Although not for the reason you think it is.

You do realize they're talking about Australia, right?

you to be really interested in the question, but anyway.

Hippies have indeed left Greens pretty much everywhere where they've become part of the system, Green Capitalism of urban liberals was a no-sell from the beginning. That doesn't mean hippies would not vote a Green candidate if and when they vote, hippies are not predictable.

last time I voted was a gay Green candidate for president or Finland, he got more that 40% against the conservative who won and no other candidate could have done better against that conservative.

all I know about hippies is that it is some kind of twisted and sick insider joke, as no self-respecting hippie would never call itself by that name. Certainly not decent citizens and tax payers of Rainbow people, ecovillagers, bald dreadlock punk-reggae weirdoes etc. etc. etc.

I learned the expression "fucking hippies" from ecovillagers I lived with, most often in reference to differences concerning temporal realities.

I currently subscribe to the narrative that when the original hippie movement almost immediately crashed and burned from overflow of energy, the warm heart, feet firmly on ground and heads far out in sky were preserved in the Rainbow meetings. And from there continued spreading and taking many forms. More mystical and mythical narratives are better to leave to camp-fire circles.

the Greens of the US or of Finland, for example

This piece, about Australia's Greens, is interesting because it points out the hazard of ignoring the slogan "All politics is local"

Here, the claim is that Greens elected to local city council positions, concentrated on abstract generic issues of no immediate local importance, instead of concentrating on local municipal issues, like potholes in the roads -- and for that reason suffered setbacks in the latest elections, losing support even from the people who generally agreed with them on big-picture issues

and with lot of variation, there tends to be general drift with political movements with common origin such as Greens, reformist social democrats etc., worth observing and discussing. Comparative method of finding meaningful generalisations.

Fully agree with 'think global, act local".
