Private Data Brokers Know Too Much About You

May 31, 2014 8:52 p.m. ET
Al Lewis

... Last week, the Federal Trade Commission published a detailed report on all the information that private data brokers have collected on you.

The nine companies that the agency studied — Acxiom, CoreLogic, Datalogix, eBureau, ID Analytics, Intelius, PeekYou, Rapleaf and Recorded Future—apparently know just about everything ...

They know how you voted. They know where you live, and what you spend on rent or mortgage payments. They know what kind of car you drive, and when you're likely to replace it. They know if you're a gambler or a smoker, or if you're obese. They know what kind of diseases you have.

The data allow them to label people for marketing purposes, but it's easy to see how data could be used for other purposes. Labels for types of people that are noted in the FTC's report include: "Financially Challenged," "Underbanked," "Thrifty Elders" and "Working-Class Moms." And then there's "Biker/Hell's Angels," "Bible Lifestyle," "Leans Left" and "Political Conservative" ...

that could do things like make laws to limit the data corporations can gather and keep. Boy, that'd be swell.

Our government is AWOL...totally neutered. Congress needs to pass laws making breaching privacy a crime.

Wish the article went into more detail about that.

On edit. I see it's not an article but an editorial.

Lot of shenanigans during the Bush years, and they tried other stunts after that. Their candidates for Governor were particularly sleazy as are most of their other candidates.

But they can check my registration and see what I'm registered as. Then combine that with having given money to "Democratic Underground", Alan Grayson, Elizabeth Warren, etc. They can't *know*, but they can have an awfully good idea.
