(4,744 posts)I never imagined we would come this far in my lifetime. I am cautiously optimistic but even if the rulings do not go our way the momentum is building to a point of no return. The rainbow colors will prevail.

(12 posts)In a democracy where majority rules, acceptance is here and the United States is not going back, regardless of what a few right-wing judges say.
Freedom for LGBT removes one more shackle from us all. Now, if we can find a way to cut the one stamped 'Financial Overlords'.

(2,965 posts)I To me, it is an economic fairness issue. Same sex couples are barred from certain tax savings and that is discriminatory, IMO. In those states where same sex marriage is legal and an employee can enroll their spouse in employer provided health insurance, the cost of that insurance becomes an addition to the employee's federal taxable income.Employee contributions for the health insurance can be pre-tax for hetero couples, but not same sex. The spouse can't participate in a Flexible Spending Plan (FSA) either since there is no marriage in the eyes of the feds.
I worked in the employee benefits/taxation field and tend to look at some issues from that perspective. I wonder if some folks who are opposed to same-sex marriage might benefit from looking at it from an economic perspective.

(34,655 posts)I gotta say, I'm appreciative of all the positive attention after decades of open hostility from the culture at large. I'm actually amazed, never thought I'd live to see the day.
Thank you everyone for your thoughtful actions, no matter which end of the political spectrum you claim. And especially the younger crowd who are a remarkable, honest, mature , smart, aware, generous and incredibly funny generation.
Now get off my rainbow lawn!

(26,571 posts)Of course, that was 1960-1965, a time of don't ask, don't tell. If anyone outside our circle called my friend a "fag" I fiercely defended him; not by defending his right to be what he was, but by denying that he was what he was. Everyone in our little circle knew the truth, but he was our friend and we defended him whenever necessary, doing the right thing for the wrong reasons.
That's how it was, just 50 years ago.. I'm happy America's changed.
My friend and I stayed in touch for years. He came out in the seventies after serving honorably in the Air Force. Sadly, like many friends, he died of aids. The real legacy of Ronald Reagan.
