(614 posts)It was ridiculous and offensive then and it's no different on RT.

(904 posts)...I've noticed you've been on this anti-RT kick for a long time.
I think that the vast majority of people who watch people like Alex Jones (even those who watch RT) can figure out that he's a charlatan and a kook. Seriously, i don't think Alex Jones is going to get any bigger than he has - he had his rope, and he has pretty much hung himself with most people.
RT is just a media outlet that I (or anybody else) can choose to watch or not watch. I don't get my marching orders from them. I know what their slant is, just as I know the slant of most of America's Media (which is just as egregious, IMHO). At least RT will put on these fringe voices from time to time - I think knowing what the fringe is allows us to learn more about where the center is (or should be.).

(12,882 posts)When will we see Thom Hartmann on one of the main American news outlets???
elzenmahn
(904 posts)...because the American outlets are corporate owned, and he says and advocates for things that are diametrically opposed to the corporate bottom line:
1. A wealth tax on all personal wealth over $1 Billion;
2. A return to the 90% marginal tax rate;
3. A return to import tariffs;
4. and on, and on.
I remember Keith Olbermann having him on once as a guest pundit on Countdown. But that's pretty much the extent of how much the "mainstream" will tolerate him and his views. (Which, for the most part, I agree with.)

(3,982 posts)anything to do with "Russians". They don't stop at RT or Putin, they try and stereotype most all Russians as "Stalin lovers" and such.
I thought we were through with that crap years ago.

(1,648 posts)RT is a media corporation that doesn't owe it's existence to Big Business in the USA. I watch it sometimes, holding reality as a mirror to what I'm being told and I bet most viewers do too, so attacks upon it are "cold warish" and are out of date...if you gotta hate, find a more appropriate target of your feelings...
uhnope
(6,419 posts)You're wrong. RT is not "just a media outlet"--do your homework. And RT doesn't have Alex Jones on as a "charlatan and kook," they have had him on--regularly--as an expert and analyst.
Sorry, as long as fools/Putinistas are posting RT vids onto DU, I'll be posting vids that expose RT for what it is.

(3,982 posts)I usually don't pay that much heed to RT, a lot of the same info can be found on the same sites we used to trust when Bush was president.
But I am tempted to do so just because the redbaiting cold war crap is tiring, since it is really stuff that is pretty much RW territory.
However, since this is a somewhat liberal site I don't think redbaiting in general is successful, other than folks that already are in that mindset.

(6,419 posts)and collaborating with the dictatorship by posting RT vids is not liberal/progressive.
What part of anti-gay laws, closing down the media, putting dissenters in prison, millitary takeover of sovereign countries and general dictatorship do you think is not a legitimate target for progressive?
newthinking
(3,982 posts)It is just funky seeing it on a "liberal" site.
The mods should crack down on some of this as the posters are actually often bigoted against Russians in general. Somehow it seems our old cold war thinking makes it ok to be bigoted and stereotype "Russians" (Or Ukrainians who speak Russian), while we would never tolerate the same kind of broad strokes against other cultures.
uhnope
(6,419 posts)though it won't affect you since you're probably actually just plain pro-Putin, and so pro-dictatorship. Anyone who is accusing me or my post of being "bigoted" is lying, so why don't you withdraw your comment?

(3,982 posts)in the post I am responding to.
If I disagree with you I must be a Putin lover (communist lover was the term before), dictator lover, etc.

Because you overtly did it in post #9.
After you answer that, please explain how pointing out the human rights hell of totalitarian Russia is "redbaiting", esp. since there are no "reds" involved. And especially because you yourself don't understand the term "red-baiting" fully, since the phenomenon had a much to do with the internal politics of the USA as with the USSR. This example, standing up for human rights around the globe and so rejecting Putin TV, is not that.

RT is okay, it's no better or worse than all the other biased outlets out there.
Plus, they all have a different blind spot, so you need to watch different news channels to see what the other ones are missing out.
