MINNEAPOLIS
After years of struggle, a Twin Cities worker center announced a landmark agreement with Target Corporation to improve conditions and uphold the rights of workers who clean Target stores.
CTUL, Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en la Lucha/Center for Workers United in Struggle, announced Tuesday that the Minnesota-based retailer has agreed to a Responsible Contractor Policy covering the companies it hires to clean its stores. The policy:
Protects and ensures workers rights to collectively bargain with their employers;
Ensures that workers have the right to form safety committees in the workplace made up of at least 50 percent of workers who are designated by their coworkers; and
Ensures that workers are not forced to work seven days a week.
The mood was joyous at Bethany Lutheran Church, where CTUL held its press conference, as it has been a four-year struggle for organizers to have their voices heard.
