This link should lead to 26 other lectures, as well. Recommended by TNC at The Atlantic Monthly. Posting here to share - I haven't listened to them all.

Blight's book on reconstruction, Race and Reunion, is excellent. So is "When This Cruel War is Over."
Brilliant stuff.

I'm reading Q now, and plan make it all the way through without skipping to the end... which I did with Gone Girl...lol... cause I wanted to know if my guess was correct after a few chapters (it was). Q is by a group of Italian writers and is a fictional account of a heretic and a Vatican enforcer named Q who is chasing down heretics during the time of religious wars in Europe when Martin Luther was alive. The writers' collective calls themselves Wu Ming or Luther Blissett, for Q.

(76 posts)have already started over. Not to be missed by any American who is even slightly interested in history or any American who is interested in winning against the foes of democracy. They are the same people then and now and he makes a unassailable and imo, enjoyable case.
A "must watch!" if there ever was one.

I enjoyed reading TNC's ruminations on the Civil War, and would like to also read Out Of The House of Bondage, by Thavolia Glymph.
Her book talks about the savagery of the white southern mistress of the house. Twelve Years a Slave went into a little bit of that, with Patsey's treatment by Epps' wife. Patsey was raped by Epps and his wife took out her rage on Patsey.
The Hermitage, Andrew Jackson's home, is located in my hometown. I remember seeing some girls I know dressed up in the garb of the era who worked there, and it just made me feel disgusted to see them. I know this makes no sense, in terms of... they had a job to dress up in period costume... but Jackson's slave cabins are still standing on the site, so... that was my response.
I HATE romanticizing the past - especially from white people.
One time a friend of mine who is an African American woman dressed up for Halloween as Scarlet O'Hara. This was at a conservative big business and everyone was encouraged to dress up. It was a great moment. Very smart, meta commentary on the environment of vapid southern white women who just love Gone With the Wind...
