the MSM and talk (aka HATE) radio reaction would be today IF this program had been created by Clinton or Obama. I understand it was somewhat perpetuated under Obama, but seriously folks, can u imagine any President banning/reversing/stopping overnight a program like this run by the intelligence services of 'Merica - especially if that President valued his/her life? If it had been either Clinton or Obama CREATING the program under their watch my best guess is the cry today for IMPEACHMENT then TRIAL FOR WAR CRIMES might be deafening....

Just what "was somewhat perpetuated under Obama"?

Did Obama keep Gitmo open? Yes, but only because Congress refused to allow the transfer of prisoners to American soil so he could close it.

Were any of those detained at Gitmo tortured after January 20, 2009? No. Let me say it again, NO.

Except for those 5 words (important ones at that), your comment is spot on.

And last April, ABC News reported that top Bush aides, including former vice president Cheney, micromanaged interrogation tactics from the White House basement.

"The high-level discussions about these 'enhanced interrogation techniques' were so detailed," ABC's sources said, "some of the interrogation sessions were almost choreographed -- down to the number of times CIA agents could use a specific tactic." Those discussions started right after Zubaydah's capture in the spring of 2002. According to ABC, the CIA briefed the White House group on its plans to use aggressive techniques against Zubaydah and received explicit approval.

Techniques that created damage short of "the level of death, organ failure, or the permanent impairment of a significant body function" were later authorized in an August 2002 Justice Department memo, known as the Torture Memo.

The Torture Doctors

An expert panel concludes that the Pentagon and the CIA ordered physicians to violate the Hippocratic Oath

By Scott Horton

snip*The two-year study, whose findings were issued in a report called “Ethics Abandoned: Medical Professionalism and Detainee Abuse in the “War on Terror,” was conducted by the Institute on Medicine as a Profession at Columbia University, and was supervised by a board of nineteen preeminent physicians, lawyers, and health-policy experts. After extensively surveying publicly available information, the report’s authors concluded that health professionals at Guantánamo had “designed and participated in cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment and torture of detainees.”

The report acknowledges that the Obama Administration has made changes to the Guantánamo system, but expresses serious concerns about systematic and ongoing ethics lapses in the detention center’s notorious force-feeding program. The Pentagon, it notes, “continues to follow policies that undermine standards of professional conduct” with respect to interrogation, hunger strikes, and the reporting of abuse. Doctors and nurses at Gitmo are required to participate in the force-feeding of detainees, who are placed in extensive bodily restraints for up to two hours twice a day, which the report’s authors conclude (as the American Medical Association did earlier this year) violates basic ethical rules.

The APA Grapples with Its Torture Demons: Six Questions for Nathaniel Raymond

Nathaniel Raymond on CIA interrogation techniques.

By Scott Horton

One of the enduring questions surrounding the torture and black-sites program run by the CIA between early 2002 and the early fall of 2006 relates to the role played by psychologists and the bizarre conduct of their professional association, the American Psychological Association (APA). Drawing on a cache of secret email communications between key players in the torture program and senior officers of the APA, Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter James Risen suggests in Pay Any Price, his new book, that the APA rushed to change its ethics rules to allow its members to participate in the torture program. A key role in these disclosures is played by Nathaniel Raymond, a war-crimes investigator who analyzed these furtive communications for the FBI and who now heads Harvard’s Signal Program on Human Security and Technology. I put six questions to Raymond about the new disclosures, what they tell us about the APA, and the adoption of torture techniques by the CIA.

1. One of the most far-reaching disclosures contained in James Risen’s new book has to do with a CIA contractor named Scott Gerwehr. Risen says that Gerwehr spoke with a human rights investigator who secured an archive of his emails relating to his work for the CIA on interrogations issues. Are you that person? How did you come to meet Gerwehr, and why did he confide in you?

Yes, I am the unnamed human rights investigator referenced in Risen’s book. In the fall of 2006, Dr. Brad Olson, a Chicago-based professor of psychology, met Scott Gerwehr at a conference, where they discussed the treatment of detainees in U.S. custody.

Brad referred Scott to me at Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), where I worked on the Campaign Against Torture at the time. Scott and I spoke soon thereafter, on November 1, 2006. That phone call was the only substantive conversation we ever had

The UK, French and Scandinavian media (to name a few) even documented a lot of what is now coming forth. Including their own countries' complicity and culpability, with the renditions for example.

And with apologies to the many millions of Americans (and I know there were many) who actually *did* listen, a majority apparently did not, we were called anti American (I'm Norwegian) for trying to inform you. Followed by the regular rants. As were many Americans, of course. I can't even begin to imagine how that must've felt.

An American friend of mine, a former and long since recovering Bush supporter, told me that many Americans suffered from a 9/11 PTSD induced tunnel vision that it took a long time to shake off.

They ignore WE THE PEOPLE, in favor of them, the corporations. It's not justice, it's "just us." 30. The CIA
Tue Dec 9, 2014, 05:43 PM
Dec 2014

Granted, I understood why they wanted t keep the CIA separate at the beginning: people were scared of what J. Edgar Hoover would do with the CIA; he very well probably would have started World War Three. However, the CIA is little fairyland where people who tow a political line and whose blood is the right shade of American Blue get to play. The reason we get outclassed by Russians, British and even Pakistan is because he have an agency that picks the intelligence to suit the agenda, not one that is actually trying to find useful information. In short, our Intelligence agency is run like our news media, meant to manipulate the truth to protect the corporate sponsors.

Add this to the reason why, if Jeb runs in 2016, I will vote for a bucket of maggot eaten fish if the Democrats nominate it. The Bushes are a cancer, and jeb is arrogant to think he can drive the machine. It will be the biggest crash since Phaeton tried driving Apollo's chariot, and no, your folks left of the far left, who think the apocalypse will be great, you will go down along with us as well.

Tue Dec 9, 2014, 06:58 PM

the undeniable part of this is it was mainly a white male mistreatment through torture and mayhem: murder of mainly males of another race and non-Christain culture. This is Ferguson, too. Its all done not because the perpetrators thought it was right, for some greater purpose, they did it because they knew they'd get away with it. They knew it was wrong.

And a lot of the 'personnel', the assembly line production workers of torture - mostly white, mostly male - are becoming law enforcement officers.

We bring war criminals to The Hague for crimes like these. Someone is responsible.

In an attempt to dissway the inevitable back-lash, outrage of the American people over today's Senate report on torture, George Bush and Dick Cheney along with their "neo-con-chicken-hawks loyalist began to do in earnest what they've always done, what they've been successful at time and time again whenever their criminal activities are to be revealed they go into full "propaganda mode" starting with applying of the "Propaganda lipstick" on the Pig, this time its a Pig named CIA Torture Program (which if it weren't so repugnant sounds like a game show.) However as in most cases, if not applied with a steady hand, care and professionalism too much lipstick tends to bleed, smear, making said pig to appear garish...like a bad stand-in for the late great Betty Davis (sorry Ms. Davis) in Whatever Happened to Baby-Jane. They begin touting how successful these tactics were, how valuable information was gleamed from a little thing called "water-boarding." But, as Ali Soufan, former FBI Special Agent said when interrogating Abu Zubaydah: "When they are in pain, people will say anything to get the pain to stop. Most of the time, they will lie, make up anything to make you stop hurting them. That means the information you're getting is us."

Unfortunately, as everyone knows (except Rethuglicans) no amount of lipstick, foundation, eyeliner, perfume can remove the ugly stench of what they have done in Iraq/Afghanistan to the people of Iraq, of Afghanistan. As more American read the Senate Report and fully understand what was done in "our-collective-name" they will come to know, as Malcolm X said "You've been had, you've been took, you've been hoodwinked, bamboozled." They will know that their President and his elk looked us in the eye and LIED and for that there is no redemption. And what about us, what can we do to redeem ourselves for the scourge we released on the world community..can we ask and expect redemption

CIA legal counsel Rizzo is on with Wolf Bllitzer. Blitzer played the clip from this morning where Feinstein was giving cover to Chimpco by saying she was convinced that the Bush administration was not briefed about the torture by the CIA. Rizzo told Blitzer that he is the one who briefed Condi Rice and Cheney and he says there's no doubt Cheney at least knew it all, since even before the time the torture was implemented and only proposed. He doesn't know if they were fully briefed on all the sites where torture occurred, but he says he himself briefed them at meetings as to all the details of the types of methods used at meetings where Condi was the meetings chairman. Why is Feinstein saying that Bush didn't know?

Set the way-back machine back to pre 2004 election campaign time. Karl Rove's "War President" needed a political victory in the cluster-fuck that Iraq had turned into. No WMDs, no end to the fighting, Saddam and Bin Laden still loose, so in order to find Saddam and score a political victory in time for the 2004 political campaign for president, Rove Cheney and the neocon hordes decided to turn up the heat in places like Abu Ghraib and Gitmo. Up popped the old Gestapo justification for their "Verschärfte Vernehmung" Bush's pet lawyers like Yoo and Gonzales and Addington, based on old Nazi "legal" reasoning made torture "LEGAL" and the CIA went medieval/GESTAPO on applying the Gestapo techniques right down to the use of attack dogs on unarmed restrained POWs.

It really was "POLITICAL," like the GOP is saying...I can see no other reason for their "justification" of these crimes. The motive was there. The stage was set and General Miller, who had set up the torture program at GITMO, was transferred to Iraq to show the boys how it was to be done.

The statute of limitation, still hasn't run out on those WWII era torturers and murderers. This needs to be addressed and sorted out, before some day, torture becomes the norm in our own country,(if it hasn't already) buy a bunch of maniacs, like the neocon war criminals holding all the political cards again someday.

The GOP is also raising holy hell today, about the ACA being "unread," before it was voted on, but they never said a damned word about the Patriot Act, being passed without being read.

That argument that life was saved because these acts of torture is the Bush and Cheney’s personal antipathy, their deep seated feeling of dislike and disrespect of either culture.

Bush and Cheney created a scheme of profiteering combined with the mainstream media’s complicity with those that reasoned America in to war.

Bush and Cheney inspired the economic engine of terrorism war and of hate based politics of the new millennium.

The human moral authority in the argument to torture to save lives is antithetical to American believes. It begs the question how you save lives when you start a basic war… That whole argument to torture to save lives while charging into war is insane.

What is worse is that the very living document, the Constitution of America stands firm for religious freedom, however going to war with Iraq firmly established in only one religion shows an incredible arrogance and defiance in the basics of sovereignty, granted even though such sovereignty is antiquated.

Mainstream media never argued that going to war was done with arrogance and mounting disgrace.

Iraq a country in centuries of religious tyranny where the Quran is the Constitution, anyone who is not Islam is an infidel. The only thing to expect is an explosion of hatred, the world is getting it…

Whether we like it or not Feinstein is the lioness of the Democratic pride.

To have the courage to announce this shows me there is goal to cleanse America and most of all prevent this type of war profiteering action from occurring again.

So America and the world does not suffer another round of arrogance or defiance in our political system. America must be able to identify the political people who cheat the treasury in false presentations to war at the same time delivering a commercial economic mess in banking failures.

Any time the Bush family is in politics some type of banking screw up happens this goes all the back to Prescott Bush in world war two. Its obvious the Bush family still cheat in banking schemes.

It does mean that for the first time in the American recorded history a president, a Republican clearly stands guilty of war crimes and economic swindling needs to be convicted.

From my view this ugly American era needs to be debated honestly. All secrets must be opened for public airing which will likely expose not only the media complicity to crimes but also the high level banking corruption that has international implications.

I couldn't agree more with your post.

"From my view this ugly American era needs to be debated honestly. All secrets must be opened for public airing which will likely expose not only the media complicity to crimes but also the high level banking corruption that has international implications."

I think you're right. Posting the Ten Commandments in the sky ain't going to get it. "Gawd has forgiven me totally, for all that shit," or "I forgot," will not suffice to whitewash away such ruthless criminal activity as America suffered under the yolk of neconism gone vile. There was no facet of American government left un-raided un-plundered or un-pillaged, by the Bush Cheney gang. Give Jeb the keys to the White House and the neocons will all be back in business, unless all that dirty laundry is aired out before the election in 2016. It's time for all truth to come out, or you may consider trust extinct in Washington. A government by the bidder, and for the bidder needs to be addressed also, ASAP.

I hate as bad as anyone in America, what happened in New York and Washington on 9/11/2001. I hate it even worse that our government stooped to the same murderous level as the "Bad Guys." The real shock and awe, is that the neocons so far, have gotten away with the horrible crimes that they have committed. Let the criminals run wild and they will never stop the madness of the Bush administration. All of Lady Liberty's tears are no doubt rusting away her very foundation.

"Should any American soldier be so base and infamous as to injure any [prisoner]. . . I do most earnestly enjoin you to bring him to such severe and exemplary punishment as the enormity of the crime may require. Should it extend to death itself, it will not be disproportional to its guilt at such a time and in such a cause... for by such conduct they bring shame, disgrace and ruin to themselves and their country."
-- George Washington, charge to the Northern Expeditionary Force, Sept. 14, 1775

arrested those associated with torture and ship them to the Hague for war crimes. If the USA really wants to heal, we need to have real justice against those that approved, knew of, and did the torturing. The USA was aggressive in the arrest of Nazises charged with war crimes, now lets see how aggressive the USA and serious about torture they are.
Just releasing a report and saying we did wrong and now it all behind us in not enough.
Lets get serious and treat these people associated with torture the same as we treated the Nazi war crime criminals.

In fact this torture is much worst and did nothing to secure our nation or even the world. G. Bush, Cheney and others just created a fire storm with the Iraq war. They need to have their day in court and defend themselves. Tens of thousands were killed by G. Bush and his war actions.
The GOP continues to have the same feelings that G. Bush has.

Our government must be real serious, and to stop future torture bring those people to trial.

still in DC. running our nation. They are about to take over our country and we must show them that they are wrong and will be charged if they do the same. The GOP continues to think they are beyond our laws that is why we have so many criminal GOP people in government. From state governors to community govt.
Lets put the GOP on notice immediately that the American people will NOT stand for torture.
