This is one fortunate sea otter. Found emaciated and with injuries to his hind flippers, the sea otter was brought in by the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre. Working with the BCSPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre, they were able to give the otter medicine and return his body temperature back to normal. He continues to receive 24-hour treatment for eventual release back into local waters. Heres hoping for a speedy recovery for this furry one.

Membership to these organizations is often fully or partially tax deductible. You almost have to support them, because all the excuses have been taken away.
Great story!

Tests showed that he was hypoglycemic, a sign that he has not been meeting his daily caloric requirement for some time. He was transported to Vancouver and admitted to the Rescue Centre where staff continue to stabilize him. He is receiving 24-hour intensive care and is being hand-fed every two hours. It is still too early to tell if he will survive, but we are doing everything we can to ensure he has the best chance for a successful rehabilitation for eventual release back into local waters.

(22,665 posts)6. I have sad news to report about Whiffen. He died.
The story linked was written today, but it's a story about a sea otter who was rescued in February of 2014 and named Whiffen.
Whiffen, sea otter rescued by Vancouver Aquarium, dies - 05/13/14
A sea otter rescued from a spit of land near Sooke, B.C., in February has died.
Named Whiffen, after the spot where he was discovered, the eight-year-old sea otter was emaciated and hypoglycemic with high liver enzymes, a damaged gastrointestinal tract and wounded hind leg. He was transferred to the Vancouver Aquarium for treatment and rehabilitation.
Whiffen died on Saturday while undergoing an MRI, Vancouver Aquarium said Tuesday in a statement.
"The scan was intended to discover why the sea otter was still not gaining weight, had progressive muscle loss, head tremors, weakness, and was not getting better," the statement reads. - CBC News.

When I saw the date on the video I went searching for the answer as to the outcome of the rescue. Unfortunately it wasn't a positive end for Whiffen, but he did help VA research.
If only our seas were getting healthier and more abundant with sea creatures, these species could recover more quickly. But we all know that's not the case. Our air, land and waters are getting more polluted by the day.

(22,665 posts)8. Plus, many rescues have happy endings
Otter 501, a.k.a. Luna, as she's known by the constantly rotating in-house movie theater going at MBA, was one such success story. She had one unsuccessful release into the wild after rehabilitation, but the second took. And she's had at least one pup since. All thanks to the gal who produced the video below, also making special appearances in Saving Otter 501, MBA & PBS.

Helps explain more of the direction Whiffen was headed and the seriousness of his condition in early May.
