(70,490 posts)"I'm all for helping the people in New Jersey. I don't really remember me voting that way," Graham said.
Pressed further, he said: "Anyway, I don't really recall that, but I'd be glad to look and tell you why I did vote no, if I did."

(2,382 posts)... these weasels come up with to explain why SC should get disaster relief when they voted against aid to NJ and a fellow Republican! The fact that Christie diverted federal funds and didn't even disperse a lot of the money where it was supposed to go is a discussion for another time. Maybe during his trial for corruption!

(180 posts)All the Republicans in the Senate voted AGAINST giving Federal aid to New Jersey! 2013
I think since they already GET(TAKE) more money than they send in to Washinton, they've already got their share of federal money!
Why is it that the Republicans always win? They vote against aid to other states with emergencies, but as soon as they have an emergency they cry for help and the Democrats buckle and give it to them!
Since they DONT believe in giving emergency relief to other states, why should they get help?
Graham said, "I don't care what it costs, we need help",. Oh really????
As Lawerence Wilkerson said, the empire is breaking up, and that we could break up into different states. The sooner the better! Let these red states become countries( third world). Its about time they stood on their own feet and didn't depend on us northerners for help!

(1,606 posts)That's why we do not stoop to the ridiculously hypocritical levels that they do. Perhaps we still believe in the notion of the broader public welfare? Or perhaps because we are truer patriots who consider with equal empathy and a fair-minded sense of justice the plight and needs of our fellow countrymen/women regardless of their location, religion, orientation, etc.?
Just because conservatives have exposed themselves for a weakness in character it does not follow that we must do the same. To do so would make us no better than them. As it is, Americans who are paying attention have a very clear choice.
Hope that makes sense, but I certainly understand your frustration.

(3,248 posts)Does anybody doubt that the next time there is a disaster in a blue area or state--an earthquake here in CA, perhaps another hurricane in New Orleans--that they'll develop another case of amnesia and vote against it?
We need to set up a better system of federal disaster relief so it isn't dependent on the goodwill of people who have no goodwill. Otherwise, it's just a system of confiscation from liberal states to support the corrupt governments of conservative states.

(3,457 posts)If you look only at the first measurehow much the federal government spends per person in each state compared with the amount its citizens pay in federal income taxesother states stand out, particularly South Carolina: The Palmetto State receives $7.87 back from Washington for every $1 its citizens pay in federal tax. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/05/which-states-are-givers-and-which-are-takers/361668/

(5,902 posts)My father taught at Ole Miss for a few years. The place is basically a pork farm.
Just about every new building or new program, was the result of federal pork - a tradition started by longtime Appropriations Committee Chairman (and Ole Miss alum) Jamie Whitten. That in itself wouldn't be so bad, except that it would be invariably treated as a gravy train by the local good ole' boy network - which pretty much takes each new federal grant as an opportunity to dole out padded contracts and plum jobs among themselves, friends. and relatives (and reputedly, mistresses). As for actual results. Well, you can imagine.
Many of the same people were, of course, far-right Republicans who bitched and moaned against "gummint pork and welfare" every chance they got.

(36,392 posts)If the people of SC were left to fend for themselves right now, and were told that this is the direct result of their congressional delegation (and governor) expressing disdain for any and all federal government, things might change. But unless we stop rewarding their behavior, nothing will change.

(14,337 posts)my sympathies go out to the people of SC who deserve all the relief efforts they can get. Same as NY and NOLA. Hear that Republicans, especially Marco Rubio of FLORIDA (where I now live), who said No to Sandy relief. I suppose he thinks Florida will never need Hurricane Relief?????
It should be given to any state regardless of whether it is your own or whether you are a Democrat or Republican Senator.

(3,426 posts)It's not like they are unaware of the weather changes over the years. Really now the scientists took interest in the Charleston area back in 1973 when Charleston got a 10 inch snow drop ,the last time the area had seen any snow was 100 years before that. the state knows ,but all six of those freaks don't apparently ,or maybe they do. New York got a blizzard in 77 ,that was kind of freaky too. high winds, high water ,come hell or high water in South Carolina right ?
The people are not stupid ,they know, they vote and political preferences change.

(2,961 posts)I have the newspaper that came out that morning. There were people skiing across the Cooper River Bridge.

(3,426 posts)The city shut down. Schools closed ,work places closed ,roads closed.
It was unique ,unusual and there were problems but it didn't last very long, within days the snow was all gone.
Beyond 100 years prior, there were no further records of snow fall according to the information released through the media at that time.
The scientists were studying weather changes through grants during the Nixon administration before the hush hush came back around -global warming so fourth. The study was global. Still is .
There were some pretty serious rain and wind storms that year in the area too, one shut the city down again. Flooding storm damage, all that.
And all that just keeps getting worse all over the globe.
As a matter of fact, I recall talking to people about weather changes in that there is something more going on in South Carolina from a global perspective, as I said ,people are not stupid, they know. Those republican politicians ,sooner or later they, the people there will have hand enough of that, they will conclude they have no further use of them and all that ,and than it will become time for the political climate to change,or change back !
It my be a little slow in motion but when happens ,it will happen fast !

(56,828 posts)federal aid. To say otherwise is playing politics and being divisive. They only opposed Sandy relief because God told them to and because it was full of free pork for blue states. It wasn't partisan at all.

(3,871 posts)for Superstorm Sandy. Please note the two changes mentioned after the map - changes regarding the states of Washington and Maine.
This map is derived from the most recent House and Senate votes to appropriate aid for the victims of Superstorm Sandy. The principal color of the state indicates the nature of that state's US Senate vote - green marks two yea's; yellow marks a split vote; and red marks two nay's. Each state's black dot has a color on it to indicate the nature of that state's US House vote - green notes that more than 2/3 of that state's House delegation voted yea; yellow notes that more than 1/3 (but not more than 2/3) of that state's House delegation voted yea; and red indicates that 1/3 or less of that state's House delegation voted yea.
Some states' delegations - namely, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Idaho - voted en bloc against extending disaster aid.
Of all the gulf states, Mississippi seems to have been the most appreciative of past aid. Good on Mississippi.
Note these changes: Murray (D-WA), Not Voting (WA to yellow) and King (I-ME), Not Voting (Maine to yellow).

(2,208 posts)I firmly believe we are all in this together, to aid each other in hard times, especially disasters like super storm Sandy or these floods in SC this week. So I don't begrudge helping these hypocrites along with the decent people in their states, but I do shake my head at the audacity of these politicians to ask for aid now with a straight face. Lindsey Graham sys he "doesn't remember" if he voted against disaster aid for the Northeast, but he did -- twice.

(24,695 posts)WHOA is ME and my State-------------------sorry, but they should be asked about this every time they go on a show, radio, newspaper-------------------they did not for once think about the damage to New York, New Jersey ,or any other eastern seaboard state in the Mid-Atlantic-------------------it was pull yourself up by the boot straps and tough it out, because we don't want to give you "your" money to help you out to recover or make your life better---------------------sorry,that's doesn't hold water or anything for that matter.
How does it feel to have your foot stuck in your proverbial mouth.
The folks down there need help lots of it, and I think "we" as a society should help.
But I also think "we" has a country deserve an apology from these grand standing politicians
