(8,381 posts). . . less than a month before he died. His COPD was very advanced by that point. He was rehearsing Copeland's Third Symphony, and working with a student conductor on a Berlioz piece. Next to his conductor's podium, there was an oxygen tank and mask. While he was conducting, he displayed all of the physical intensity for which he was so well known; but when he would stop to give the orchestra instructions, he would first have to grab the oxygen mask and gasp for air for a bit. It was hard to watch, but at the same time, even though his body was clearly failing, his passion for the music, his intellect, his warmth, his humor, and his love for the young musicians with whom he was working -- all were in ample supply. It was both heart-wrenching and inspiring at the same time. What an amazing person he was, and on so many levels!

During the Dixie Chicks' controversial tour of 2005-6, Ma backed them playing cello as sideman, assisting in the string arrangements for the band.

It's lovely to see him at age 7, and heartbreaking to know how short a time one member of his audience had to live.
