Mike Malloy - John Kasich On How to Reduce Mass Shootings: Death Penalty

Ohio Governor John Kasich told reporters in New Hampshire on Friday that he considers the death penalty and long prison sentences a better approach than gun control when it comes to reducing the number of mass shootings.

Kasich, who voted for a federal assault weapons ban as a Republican congressman two decades ago, demurred when asked what steps Washington should take in the wake of the Thursday massacre at Umpquah Community College in Oregon that left 10 people dead. "I don’t believe that gun control would stop this," he told a scrum of journalists after a town hall in Goffstown, during which the subject did not come up.

In addition to Mike Malloy's point that most mass shooters end up turning a gun on themselves, people on death row in the U.S. are often convicted because they couldn't afford an attorney or team of attorneys who can manipulate the judge, jury and media.

I used to be a supporter of the death penalty until I started seeing all of the convictions overturned on DNA evidence. That showed me that our legal and judicial systems are severely flawed to the point of being a farce.

Mother Jones has a database of mass shootings

I attempted to sample the database as follows: for each month in 2015, I selected the first incident in the month with a known shooter and at least three dead; but there were no incidents meeting my criteria for April, so I also included the second incident in March

John Lee is charged with murdering his adoptive mother, his landlord, and an Arby’s manager in Moscow ID on 10 January 2015

Cedric Prather committed suicide after killing two of his children, his ex-wife, and her boyfriend in Douglasville GA on 7 February 2015

Christopher Lance Joyner committed suicide after killing his wife and a neighbor in Houston County AL on 15 Mar 2015

Sudheer Khamitkar committed suicide after killing his wife and two children in Tulsa OK on 30 March 2015

Christopher Carrillo committed suicide after killing four family members in Tucson AZ on 12 May 2015

Michael Augustine Bournes committed suicide after killing his wife and three children in Deer Lodge MT on 7 June 2015

Marquiles Whaley committed suicide after killing his girlfriend and his mother's boyfriend in Baton Rouge LA on 12 July 2015

Jody Herring is charged with the murder of her aunt, two cousins, and a social worker in Barre VT on 7 August 2015

Brian Short committed suicide after killing his wife and three children in Minneapolis MN on 8 September 2015

Chris Harper-Mercer committed suicide after killing ten in Roseburg OR on 1 October 2015

This sample strongly suggests many mass shooters will not be deterred by the threat of death or a stiff prison sentence
