he believed gays should've been allowed to serve openly in the military and was against any involvement of religion in government. I met him a few times when I was in college. He was always warm, friendly and listened to whatever anyone had to say. He thought churches should be taxed and women should make their own decisions. In some ways, he was ahead of his time, but his views on civil rights legislation and other progressive issues were free market nonsense.

This is the old style Rockefeller Republican. I think of them sort of like the folks in the DLC. You know, Leiberman, Emmanuel, Frum and Bill Clinton with his notion of The New Democrat who gets corporate money. The Dem Establishment at that point sort of became the Old Repubs.

They still wanted to govern. Until Reagan with his poisonous "I'm from the Government and I'm here to help you".
