Hopeless: Video Captures Solo Reaction As She Learns of Soccer Suspension

This is a sports story, but it is "fairly big news" as it deals with the downfall of a once-dominant soccer icon who was a role model to young girls:

The cameras were rolling when Hope Solo first heard of her six-month suspension from USA soccer... and it wasn't pretty.
"Seventeen f------ years and it's over," Solo screamed upon hearing the news.
The soccer star was being filmed by a documentary crew when she learned of the decision to suspend her for comments she made following the U.S. team's loss in the Olympics to Sweden, calling the team "a bunch of cowards."
"Six months suspension," Solo said, hugging her husband, former NFL player Jeremy Stevens. "No pay. Terminated contract. Effective immediately."
Solo was being recorded for the Fullscreen documentary, "Keeping Score," which has chronicled her journey, along with teammates Crystal Dunne and Megan Rapino as they journeyed to and from the Rio for the Olympics games.

This trailer touches on the equal pay issue, albeit briefly:

And she was the one who pointed out that the men's teams win less and get paid WAY more.

police, arranged a payoff, and then lied about it making the host country look bad.

They would have said that was really not a nice thing to do.

Or maybe just be a man, instead of a woman. Seems to get one more of a pass.

Olympic medal winner Ryan Lochte has yet another new endorsement deal.
On Tuesday the swimmer who admits he lied about being a crime victim while he was in Rio for the 2016 Olympics posted a promo video on Instagram and Twitter announcing a deal with Robocopp -- a crime prevention device maker.
"I've been traveling a lot lately. We all like to have fun, but it's a good idea to stay safe," Lochte said in a promo video. "I don't go anywhere without Robocopp."
Holding up the small Robocopp device that can give off a startling alarm, Lochte said, it "can get you out of a bad situation."
...
Pine Bros., a cough drop company, signed him to a new endorsement deal last week, saying "just as Pine Bros. is forgiving to your throat, the company asks [the] public for a little forgiveness for an American swimming legend."
Lochte is also going to appear on the next season of "Dancing With the Stars."

Guess it could have been worse. They could have treated him like a woman.

Hope Solo's age and not her sex, or her call for equal pay for female soccer players is the reason she has been kicked of the USWNT. US Soccer wants to give the younger players on the team a chance to gain experience.

Her intemperate, unsportsmanlike comments, coupled with other past behaviors (that IMO are suggestive of a mental health issue) PLUS her advocacy of fair pay, created a perfect storm.

She's a problem in terms of her ability--beyond that of other, lesser-known players-- to persuade the media to focus on the whole UNFAIRNESS WRT money...AND she's a "bad girl."

Had she demonstrated better leadership skills, she'd not have had her position yanked from under her so easily. And the money issues would stay front and center.

She can be angry, has been appropriately angry, at certain social issues like pay equity. But she can't control it. She doesn't have that skill.

The existence of an undesirable problem in one organization (NFL) is not the way to excuse a problem in another. The NFL is slowly cleaning up its act.

The USA needs leaders. There is way too much hero worship of male athletes like the NFL that is undeserved. Over-worship of athletes is bad enough, but girls and women need more role models because society is not providing them enough.

The US would do well as a society to raise awareness and appreciation of scientists, engineers, research doctors, volunteers, artists, and non-pop musicians.

It's a rather ignominious ending for her if she isn't called back to the fold. She's also facing a trial over a domestic disturbance with her relatives, so that might have influenced the decision.

She was always a difficult person, but I do think this is unkind. A bit more detail here:

Solo was a lightning rod during the Olympic tournament, irking fans in Brazil when she posted a photo on social media of herself covered with mosquito netting and armed with insect repellant. Fans booed her mercilessly and hollered "Zika!" each time she kicked downfield.

Then she caused a stir with her "cowards" comment.

Sweden's coach, Pia Sundhage, who led the U.S. team to gold medals in Beijing and London, replied by stating: "It's OK to be a coward if you win."

Solo has been making headlines throughout her stellar career.

Last month, she became the first goalkeeper with 100 international shutouts when the United States defeated South Africa 1-0 at Soldier Field in Chicago. It also was her 150th career win.

Solo won her second straight Golden Glove Award for the best goalkeeper at the Women's World Cup a year ago. Over the course of the tournament in Canada, she had five shutouts and allowed only three goals in seven games.

She has vocally advocated for women's rights. Solo was among the U.S. players who filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for wage discrimination, saying the men's national team players have been paid much more than many on the women's team.

More recently, she has called for better conditions for players in the National Women's Soccer League.

She has also been trying to avoid trial on misdemeanor domestic violence charges after a 2014 incident at her sister's home, when the goalkeeper was accused of being intoxicated and assaulting her sister and 17-year-old nephew. Solo said she was a victim in the altercation. Earlier this year, an appeals court in Washington state rejected Solo's request to avoid trial.
