I remember when I was 10 or so (back in the late 1960s), the neighbor lady came home from the grocery store when I was playing with her kids. When her husband came out to help carry in the groceries - which took up the entire back of their station wagon - she told him with worry and resignation "I spent $20."

Well, things may have been cheaper, but you were lucky to bring home $200 a week back then.
