If you like macaroni and cheese and a lot of it then you're not alone. And Costco knows that.
The wholesaler is selling a 27-lb. bucket of one of America's favorite comfort foods. And if you're worried about getting through it quickly, have no fear: the product has a 20-year shelf life.
But while the macaroni and cheese might last many years in the bucket, it has been gobbled up swiftly. Less than 24 hours after People magazine reported on the product, the Chefs Banquet Macaroni and Cheese Storage Bucket is listed as "out of stock" on Costco's website.
According to Costco's website, the product contains 180 servings and costs $89.99.

Oy, I like the occasional Kraft mac & cheese, but this some sort of punishment.

(13,677 posts)Pasta's shelf life is pretty long, even without an oxygen-free environment.
I'm not sure about the "cheese" sauce powder, but, given the low fat content, I wouldn't be surprised if it has a longer shelf life than real cheese.
All that said, it doesn't seem to be all that great of a deal. Kraft's is cheaper than this.

(14,488 posts)Cheese being a dairy product, I personally wouldn't trust it even with oxygen-absorbing packets. How can they prove without any doubt that a food product has a 20-year shelf life?
By comparison:
* this product requires preparation of a minimum of 30 servings at $0.50 per serving.
* Everyday Kraft Mac & Cheese in a 3-serving boxes (15 box purchase from WallyWorld) costs around $0.28 per serving.
Greedy, opportunistic companies are taking these survivalists for a huge ride and Trump is feeding their machine with a sugar high......

(36,818 posts)Reasonable assumptions can be made based on the packaging method, the materials contained within, and the environment in which it's stored.
Some cheddar is intentionally aged for more than a decade. If you reduce the moisture content even farther, it's not hard to see how shelf live of dairy could be greatly extended.
So-called "shelf-life" can mean a couple of different things. Canned food is safe to eat 100 years later, but acidic things like tomatoes will start to significantly degrade in quality after a few months.
