Watching Godfather I a few days ago, I was surprised at how violent it was and how much Italian

(actually, Sicilian dialect Italian) was spoken in the film. Sonny's murder was horrifying to watch as was the death of Michael's first (Sicilian) wife when she was killed by a bomb in his car meant for him. Geez, no wonder that film packed such a punch

I've lost track of how many times I've watched it. I'd shave about 10 minutes out of Michael's time in Italy, but other than that, nearly a perfect movie.

I thought that was fascinating since I had moved to NYC about that time and was ignorant of the mob influences there and in Las Vegas. Quite an eyeopener for this Texas native...

It exploits mafia stereotypes brilliantly and without boring the viewer. Loved Marlon Brando's acting. Only criticism I have is it is 15 minutes too long. I agree on a bit too much graphic violence, especially Sonny's assassination & the bloody mess with the decapitated horse head in bed. The suspense scenes at the Hospital with Michael guarding his injured father are terrific. Almost on par with best of Alfred Hitchkock.

Watched it for the first time in years fairly recently. Talia Shire (Coppola’s daughter and the future Mrs. Rocky Balboa) had a small but pivotal role.

and Puzo's writing really makes it real.

I think he was on the writing team for the movie. It is a great read, too

It is hilarious watching Brando doing a send up of himself as Don Corleone!!

So, I have to defer to the Italian speakers here on DU . . . how accurate was the spoken Italian in the movie ? And is Sicilian a separate dialect of Italian ?

Just curious. I'm always interested in how translations work out in film. I've watched movies with languages that I speak (three) and sometimes found the translations lacking. Or laughable.

I found out all kinds of interesting things about the ancient island. It had withstood the invasion and occupation of numerous empires in its long history. Way back before the Greeks even. It is also quite beautiful. They have ruins of Greek temples still standing. Quite a place.

They also have a masterpiece by Caravaggio entitled "The Martyrdom of St. Lucy" which I tried to see both times I was there but was unable to. The first time it was being restored in Florence and the second time a feud between two churches claiming ownership of the work caused it to be shut down. I was SO depressed

cutting back and forth between the incredible violence as Michael Corleone wreaks vengeance on all his enemies juxtaposed with calm scenes in the church of the christening of his infant godson. Brilliant film-making.

I stuck it out for "Sophie's Choice" but that scene has always haunted me.

And I do see "The Godfather" as a brilliant movie, I just couldn't take it. I walked out after the horse head scene.

I have read Children of Dune. It's really hard to stomach the arrogance of esoterics who enjoy talking philosophical bullshit and trash-talking technological progress.

Being an enlightened philosopher is no match for having modern medicine around.

which puts the whole story in chronological order. Coppola did this and I saw it when it was in circulation maybe 3 years or so after GF 2 was released.

It is really powerful to watch it that way without the jumping back and forth that you have in Godfather 2
