The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWho's up for an Internet game?
I've got one that's easy, and educational at the same time.
Here's how it goes:
I put out a name of a famous, or quasi-famous person, or even a fictitious character, and I post a link to their wikipedia info.
Then, the next person to post, puts up the name of another person that has EITHER the first name, or the last name, of the previous person named..along with a link to their wikipedia info.
For instance, if I started with Bruce Lee, the next poster could throw out Bruce Wayne, then the next could go with John Wayne, then the next with John Adams.
The only rule is to try and not use a name somebody else already used.....if you do, fuck it, it's ok. It's just a game.
We're going to start out with Jimmy Smith

(36,838 posts)A native of Seattle, Wilson began acting at the University of Washington, and later worked in theatre in New York City after graduating in 1986. Wilson made his film debut in Galaxy Quest (1999), followed by supporting parts in Almost Famous (2000), Steven Soderbergh's Full Frontal (2002), and House of 1000 Corpses (2003). He also had a recurring part as Arthur Martin in the HBO series Six Feet Under from 2003 to 2005.
Wilson was cast as Dwight Schrute in The Office in 2005, a role which he played until the show's conclusion in 2013. Other film credits include lead roles in the comedies The Rocker (2008) and Super (2010), as well as supporting roles in the horror films Cooties (2014) and The Boy (2015). In 2009, he provided his voice for the computer animated science fiction film Monsters vs. Aliens. More recently, he has played a recurring role on Star Trek: Discovery (2017) as well as a supporting role in The Meg (2018). In addition to acting, Wilson published an autobiography, The Bassoon King, in November 2015, and also co-founded the digital media company SoulPancake in 2008.

(36,838 posts)Called the "punk poet laureate," Smith fused rock and poetry in her work. Her most widely known song is "Because the Night," which was co-written with Bruce Springsteen. It reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978[1] and number five in the U.K. In 2005, Smith was named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.[6] In 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[7]
On November 17, 2010, Smith won the National Book Award for her memoir Just Kids.[8] The book fulfilled a promise she had made to her former long-time roommate and partner, Robert Mapplethorpe. She placed 47th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 Greatest Artists published in December 2010[9] and was also a recipient of the 2011 Polar Music Prize.

(50,552 posts)Burr's early acting career included roles on Broadway, radio, television, and film, usually as the villain. His portrayal of the suspected murderer in the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Rear Window (1954) is his best-known film role, although he is also remembered for his role in the 1956 film Godzilla, King of the Monsters!, which he reprised in the 1984 film Godzilla 1985. He won Emmy Awards for acting in 1959 and 1961 for the role of Perry Mason, which he played for nine seasons (195766) and reprised in a series of 26 Perry Mason TV movies (198593). His second TV series Ironside earned him six Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations.
Burr died of cancer in 1993, and his personal life came into question, as many details of his biography appeared to be unverifiable.[1] He was ranked number 44 of the 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time by TV Guide magazine in 1996.

(205,161 posts)And I used to attend the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden, it was an annual reunion of the summer camp where I spent summers growing up. And one year they had Arthur Godfrey and his talented palomino horse. She was retiring and as they led her out and led her equally beautiful son in - he was going to replace her on the tour - there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Until the girl in front of me announced that she'd seen the same performance in Kansas City!

(14,012 posts)John Denver had his fans, but a lot of Coloradans resented the rich, phony interloper who let out the big secret about how good living there was, but didn't live up to his own ideals of citizenship. Critics tended to fawn over him or revile him.
I don't have a strong opinion about him, really.

Spotting my beret, a monk sternly admonished me that "hats shall NOT be worn in the cathedral!"

(205,161 posts)Yikes, your Edward must have been pretty aged at that point! I don't think I ever visited Canterbury, but I did once kiss the Blarney Stone!

(14,012 posts)The cathedral at Canterbury was also the scene of the murder of Thomas Becket by knights loyal to Henry II.
Interesting that Ed Asner's birth name is Eddie.
I love Ireland.

(205,161 posts)I don't know if you ever saw "Crazy Like a Fox" on CBS, but that was when I got to know Jack Warden and I've been a fan ever since.

(14,012 posts)I never caught "Crazy Like a Fox", but I did see "Brian's Song" as a kid in suburban Chicago. Jack Warden played George Halas, so he made an impression on me. He always came across as though he wasn't acting, which is what a lot of actors strive for, I suppose.
I can still rattle off the twelve actors who played "12 Angry Men.". The casting was brilliant on that one.
Rhiannon12866
(205,161 posts)My job used to be writing the descriptions for CBS Network shows for the newspapers and "Crazy Like a Fox" was one of "my" shows and was a favorite.
As for David Pierce, he grew up in Saratoga, NY, and my mother was his Sunday School teacher. He was funny and talented even as a kid.

(205,161 posts)Actually, my first thought was the local Hyde Collection, which has an impressive collection of works by the world's most famous artists, but it appears that neither Mr. or Mrs. Hyde has an individual Wikipedia entry. IMO, she deserves one:

Wilfrid Hyde-White was a comforting voice of my childhood, and Edward Hyde narrowly beat him out for my prior entry. My wife and I will look into the Hyde's art holdings. We're loving exploring NY!
Rhiannon12866
(205,161 posts)Don't ask me why, but his name suddenly popped into my head!
And if you're interested in The Hyde Collection, it is pretty impressive, especially considering that it's located in a small, fairly rural, New York town. Name a famous artist and they're probably represented. I've been there many times, though it's been awhile. I know that they've expanded
and have added a lot of programs there, though like much else around here, it's currently "temporarily closed."
Looking at the art, I was surprised at how many are very familiar. The Rembrandt of Christ is a favorite though I've never been very religious and I once got into a dispute with a guide who insisted that Georges Seurat couldn't possibly be represented since he wasn't that prolific since he died so young. I found it and she was wrong. Anyway, this site provides a great virtual tour!

(14,012 posts)No Sisley, but they have a Dürer! I visited München's Alte Pinakotek primarily to see their holdings of his work. We'll check out The Hyde in person when the fog lifts.

(205,161 posts)Of all the times I saw The Beach Boys with my brother, he said we never did see Brian. We saw Dennis and Carl, but Brian wasn't with them, and this was back when they were still playing together.
As for the Hyde, their collection is well documented on the website. I've never accessed it before, though I've seen the collection on person, and I was pretty impressed at how extensive the website is.

(14,012 posts)I saw her in person as Heart and Boston opened for Black Sabbath, Halloween 1976.
Dürer engravings coming to The Fennimore.
Rhiannon12866
(205,161 posts)And I have never been to The Fenimore though Cooperstown is only a couple of hours away, looks pretty impressive, especially the Alexander Hamilton exhibition, and it's currently open. My mother used to take my visiting cousins from Denver to the Baseball Hall of Fame there, she brought me a Mariners mug.

Every summer at the height of the show's popularity, there would be throngs of gawkers disrupting traffic.
I felt bad for the people living in that fishbowl, with the doorbell ringing and all.

(2,561 posts)David (Hebrew: דָּוִד [a] is described in the Hebrew Bible as the third king of the United Monarchy of Israel and Judah, becoming king after Ish-bosheth.
In the Books of Samuel, David is a young shepherd who gains fame first as a musician and later by killing the enemy champion Goliath. He becomes a favorite of King Saul and a close friend of Saul's son Jonathan.
Worried that David is trying to take his throne, Saul turns on David. After Saul and Jonathan are killed in battle, David is anointed as King.

(16,934 posts)from a science magazine published in the 1980s. Someone would start with a word, and next person would say a word that was somehow related to the first word, and go on through the group who was playing. The links could get pretty subtle which made the game interesting. I loved it, but it never really caught on with the rest of the gang.
