She got a split-leaf philodendren back in the early 60's. I took it over in the 80's. I split the plant twice, but it is still huge. I am 67, and I have felt for awhile that the plant needs a new person. I looked online and found that United Plant Savers has a center near me. I got in touch with them and just today, one of their members came and got the plant. It filled the whole back of her suv. They have a visitor's center and I guess they will put the plant in the visitor center. I am so happy to find a good place for it. I was as worried about outliving the plant as I have been about outliving my pets.

(21,846 posts)I never heard of Plants United but plan to use them when I move.
Your plant must have received a lot of love over the years to last that long.

There are some good links on their site, and you can google plant conservancy, too.

(4,483 posts)for $12 at the grocery store of all places. My art teacher in jr. high, Mrs. Romayne, had a whole wall-full of huge philodendrons (I'm 73), and I bought it thinking of her. I put it in front of a sliding patio door in our bedroom (which we had to install in order to fit our bed into our house (don't ask), and it has thrived ever since.
Mrs. Romayne let me come in before Christmas and paint life-size carolers on the art room windows, even after I'd finished taking art.
Today is my late mom's birthday and I was just thinking of her as I came across your post - it warmed my heart, lifted my spirits and reminded me that we are lucky to share this planet with good people like you....

(15,088 posts)When my mother was in the memory care unit in her last days, some crafts activity or other resulted in a glitter-covered flower pot containing a sliver of a snake plant. I kept the plant alive by watering it when I went to see my mother. After she died, I took the plant home and gave it a proper pot. Two years later, it had grown into a monster, so I planted it outside. Before it freezes this fall, Ill probably take a shoot and bring it back into the house.

(16,935 posts)I posted about this plant last winter, about how long we'd had it and how big it was. Several DUers replied to the post and talked about plants they had gotten from relatives, especially from their Moms. You'll enjoy caring for the offshoots.

(2,561 posts)I have plants from several late relatives, my mom's ferns, grandma's jade plant, uncles' geranium, various colors of
epiphyllum from my mother-in-law's and some plumeria special to my husband, labeled with sources so my niece can take over when I'm gone.

(16,935 posts)I don't have many plants left now, but all of them are at least 4 years old. My daughter just brought me a pot of succulents for Mother's Day, and I haven't had time to do much with them. Hoping to transfer to planters outside.
