Thanks Father Mulcahy!!!

The only time I availed myself of the USO in the Army (they're not so much a factor anymore)
was when I had a layover at Chicago O'Hare. I think I was JUST-turned 18 and frazzled and
tired and broke and overwhelmed by the hustle-n-bustle of that airport (I'm from a relatively
small Michigan town).
.
They had what turned out (for me) to be an oasis of calm, open to the ceiling but surrounded
by 8-ft thin walls. I had awhile before my flight and it definitely helped my state-of-mind
immensely.
.
No donuts and, perhaps more disappointingly, no Donut Dollies -- although I think they were
Red Cross and not USO.

They were the women who volunteered in the RC's SRAO ("Supplemental Recreational Activities Overseas&quot branch.

A separate group, the Hospital Service Branch, provided services to patients in military hospitals. When I was in the ICU in Japan, a Red cross woman wrote a letter home to my mom for me to let her know I was okay. When I arrived back in the States, the Red Cross was there to give all of us a free phone call home.

Good people, doing good work.

Fortunately, I didn't run into MFM in his B-girl days.
