The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsTomorrow, after 16 years of dial-up, I am getting high speed.
From 28.8 kbps to 4 MB. I will be able to view videos and hear music. I will basically have to re-learn how to use my computer.
It's a miracle that I haven't put my boot through my dial-up in all these years. Dial-up can be incredibly frustrating.
Long overdue.....

(25,816 posts)I could have gone with satellite but couldn't afford it. Now with the new services I can bundle and the cost will be about the same as I have been paying. So, basically, the answer is money.

(49,445 posts)With high-speed internet, problems can be downloaded literally in a flash.
Might want to upgrade your hosts file to block out unwanted ads and dangerous websites.

(23,220 posts)Like you, I had dial-up for about fifteen years. Moving to DSL was like coming out of the Paleolithic age, and now I would kill before going back to dial-up. After two years on DSL, I still feel like I'm learning how to really use the Internet--there is so much I have missed out on, but I'm catching up! I had to harass my phone company for about eight years to get it, and even though it costs me quite a bit, I'm KEEPING IT--you will take my DSL modem away from me when you pry it out of my cold, dead, clenched fingers!

(175 posts)It will change your life. We were on dial-up forever (rural area) and also couldn't afford the satellite cost. Hi-speed became available about 3 1/2 years ago and we made the switch. About 2 years ago, some trees starting blocking the signal to the tower we get our signal from. We thought we were going to lose it forever. We were able to move our antenna to a different location. Hopefully, the trees won't grow too fast and block it again.
Congrats again.

(2,983 posts)I lived in a rural area for many years myself and had to deal with Dial-up. It wasn't until I moved out to urban California for a while that I discovered that there really was faster internet. Night and day, seriously. Enjoy the upgrade, it makes an enormous difference.
