You're out at a bar. The band has a tip jar. You request a song, and they play it for you. Do you kick in to the tip jar?

Most of my friends (and exes) are musicians. I know how hard they work, what they go through and how little they get paid. I've also been known to leave 'presents' in the tip jar, candy bars, drink tickets, stickers, little notes...

And they have a tip jar?
And you need to ask this question?

(21,977 posts)Because a lot of folks don't tip the band.
I always shamelessly pimp the tip jar from the mic. I tell the crowd to write their requests on a $20 bill and we will gladly play it!

(16,191 posts)Even if they do the request badly, they get a tip for making the effort. I won't tip if the band is genuinely terrible and I didn't make any requests, but that's about it (why encourage bad music?) If there's a tip jar out and I get any enjoyment out of their music at all, I'll try to leave something.
